Job Overview: The Database Engineer position is situated within the Digital Impact Division (DID) of UNICEF, which is focused on leveraging emerging digital technologies to enhance the organization's mission. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining operational support for current systems during this transition while also documenting existing database configurations and participating in the design and implementation of modern cloud-based data platforms. Collaboration with various teams, including technology teams and business focal points, is essential to facilitate the migration from traditional data warehouse environments to a cloud-based architecture. The role also involves establishing standards for database governance and compliance, ensuring data integrity, and monitoring the performance and capacity of database environments to ensure they are stable, reliable, and efficient.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Database Engineer will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
Supporting regular database operations and maintaining documentation of current database configurations.
Participating in the design and implementation of cloud-based data platforms.
Collaborating with technology teams and business focal points to assist in the migration of data from on-premises systems to cloud environments.
Establishing clear standards for database governance and compliance in alignment with DID service frameworks and cybersecurity requirements.
Ensuring data integrity within database environments and supporting the definition of database administration plans, including operations, upgrades, and maintenance.
Monitoring the capacity and performance of database environments to ensure stability, reliability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
Providing technical solutions that translate business requirements into effective database management practices.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Engineering, Telecommunications, or related fields. Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree combined with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. Additionally, candidates should have at least five years of relevant work experience with Oracle, Sybase, and Microsoft SQL Server databases, demonstrating hands-on experience in migrating database systems to the cloud, utilizing Oracle Data Guard and HP Service Guard, and working with cloud-based ETL and data integration tools. Proficiency in UNIX/Linux environments is also required, along with skills in Azure and cloud-based ETL processes.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master’s degree or equivalent in relevant fields such as Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Engineering, or Telecommunications. A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area, combined with two additional years of relevant work experience, may be accepted as an alternative to an advanced university degree.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant work experience, specifically in working with Oracle, Sybase, and Microsoft SQL Server databases. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in migrating database systems from on-premises to cloud environments, utilizing tools such as Oracle Data Guard and HP Service Guard, and working with cloud-based ETL and data integration tools. Experience in UNIX/Linux environments is also essential, along with a solid understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and familiarity with CI/CD processes and DevOps pipelines.
Languages: Proficiency in English is mandatory for this position, with a requirement for fluent communication skills. Additionally, knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) or a local language is considered desirable, enhancing the candidate's profile for this role.
