Job Posting Organization:
The UN Resident Coordinator System is a vital part of the United Nations, responsible for overseeing operational activities for development across various countries. The UNRC acts as the representative of the UN Secretary-General and leads the UN Country Team (UNCT), ensuring that development activities are coordinated effectively. The UNRC Office for Mauritius and Seychelles operates with a multi-country status, focusing on strategic analysis, planning, and implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF). This office plays a crucial role in enhancing UN coherence and improving the overall impact of UN programs in both Mauritius and Seychelles.

Job Overview:

The intern will contribute to the mission of enhancing the coherence of the UN System through joint UNCT policy research and analysis. This internship is particularly significant as it coincides with the implementation of the UNSDCF 2024-2028, which outlines the cooperation between the UN and the Government to achieve development priorities over the next five years. The intern will gain valuable insights into the functions of various UN agencies, the programming process, and the interaction between the UN and government counterparts. Responsibilities will include data gathering, analysis, policy research, and drafting policy briefs, providing a unique opportunity to learn about the UN's operations at the country level.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will support the Policy and data-related activities of the RCO and the UNCT, which include:
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Gathering quantitative and qualitative data from various sources such as surveys, databases, and reports; ensuring data accuracy and consistency; using software tools like Excel, SPSS, or Python for data analysis; and preparing visual presentations of data.
  • Policy Research and Support: Assisting in researching current policies relevant to the UNSDCF, comparing policies across regions, and reviewing academic and governmental publications to inform policy development.
  • Report/Policy Brief Writing and Documentation: Writing research summaries and policy briefs, creating presentations for stakeholders, and condensing complex findings into accessible content.
  • Organizational Support: Assisting in organizing events or webinars related to policy discussions.
  • Continuous Learning and Development: Participating in training opportunities to enhance skills in policy analysis and data analytics, and staying updated on trends in these fields.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience, but a relevant field of study is essential. Candidates must be students in their final year of a bachelor's degree, or enrolled in a master's or Ph.D. program, or have completed such programs. Preferred fields of study include Public Policy, Public Administration, International Development Studies, International Relations, Social Sciences, Political Science, Law, Economics, or other relevant areas. Proof of eligibility must be provided with the application.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be in their final year of a bachelor's degree or enrolled in a master's or Ph.D. program. Alternatively, they may have completed a bachelor's, master's, or Ph.D. program. The educational background should be closely related to the internship's focus, with preferred studies in fields such as Public Policy, International Development, or related disciplines. Proof of enrollment or completion must be attached to the application.

Experience:
While professional work experience is not required for this internship, candidates should have relevant academic experience or coursework that aligns with the responsibilities of the position. The internship is particularly suited for those who are in the final stages of their academic programs, allowing them to apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical setting.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations. Knowledge of French is desirable, as it is also a working language of the UN, and proficiency in both languages would enhance the intern's ability to engage with a broader range of stakeholders.
