Job Overview: The Programme Support for Media and Communication internship is located at the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) in Montreal, Canada. This internship is designed for individuals who are passionate about environmental issues and communication strategies. The intern will work under the supervision of the Public Information Officer and will be involved in creating communication products related to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The role includes assisting in the development of content for various media platforms, contributing to social media strategies, and supporting the organization of meetings. Interns are expected to work five days a week, totaling 35-40 hours, and will gain valuable experience in a global organization focused on environmental advocacy.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will have a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to: assisting in the creation of communication products on key issues under the CBD, contributing to the implementation of the social media strategy, creating engaging content for UNBiodiversity social media accounts, planning and preparing daily social media posts, monitoring the success of social media initiatives through analytics, and staying updated on new social media tools and best practices. Additionally, the intern will support the organization and preparation of meetings, providing logistical support and taking notes as needed. The intern may also be asked to assist with other duties as requested by the Public Information Officer.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent); or have graduated with a university degree. Candidates should be computer literate in standard software applications and demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, along with a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. Additionally, applicants should have the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
Educational Background: The preferred area of study for applicants includes Communications, Public Relations, or Journalism, with an advanced degree being advantageous. Experience in Social Sciences or Political Science is considered an asset. Applicants must be students in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in a Master’s or Ph.D. program, or have completed such programs. It is essential that the field of study is closely related to the internship role.
Experience: While professional work experience is not required for this internship, applicants should have a field of study that is relevant to the internship position. This allows candidates to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting and gain valuable insights into the workings of a major international organization.
Languages: Fluency in oral and written English is required for this internship, as English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of an additional official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is considered an advantage. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas: reading, writing, speaking, and understanding, while 'knowledge of' indicates a confident rating in two of the four areas.
