Job Overview:
The Text Processing Centre (TPC) within the Languages, Publications and Conference Management (LPC) Bureau is responsible for providing proofreading and text processing services to ensure the accuracy and quality of multilingual documents. The incumbent will play a crucial role in the final stages of document preparation, ensuring that all changes are accurately reflected in the translated texts and that the formatting adheres to ICAO's editorial standards. The position requires a high level of attention to detail and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team. The incumbent will report directly to the Coordinator of the TPC and will be expected to manage multiple tasks efficiently, adapting to changing priorities and deadlines as necessary. This role is essential in maintaining the integrity of ICAO's documentation and supporting the organization's multilingualism strategy.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide proofreading services to ensure the accuracy and consistency of translated texts, verifying elements such as titles, dates, formatting, and graphics.
  • Perform text processing services, including formatting graphics and charts, incorporating changes from translators, and applying ICAO's editorial standards.
  • Utilize automated information systems to manage document workflows and prepare texts for processing by computer-assisted translation tools.
  • Adapt work methods and schedules to meet deadlines, including the ability to switch tasks rapidly and work overtime if necessary.
  • Provide administrative and supervisory support, including file retention for translation jobs and on-the-job training for colleagues.
  • Act as Team Leader during meetings and perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • Secondary school education or equivalent, with completion of a typing course and an office automation course.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in text composition and proofreading.
  • Proficiency in using desktop publishing tools and the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a secondary school diploma or equivalent education from an Arabic-speaking institution, which includes completion of relevant courses in typing and office automation. This educational background is essential for performing the duties associated with text processing and proofreading effectively.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of professional experience in text composition and proofreading. Candidates should have a proven track record of working with text processing equipment and desktop publishing tools, demonstrating their ability to produce high-quality documents under tight deadlines.

Languages:
The incumbent must have an excellent command of Arabic, both spoken and written, with a strong understanding of grammar, spelling, and punctuation. A very good level of spoken and written English is also required. Knowledge of additional languages, particularly those of the Organization (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish), is desirable but not mandatory.

Additional Notes:
This is a locally-recruited position, restricted to Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, and applicants with a valid work permit. The position is fixed-term for an initial period of three years, with the first year being probationary for external candidates. ICAO staff members are expected to conduct themselves in a manner befitting their status as international civil servants, adhering to the organization's standards of conduct. The position offers a competitive salary of CAD 51,045 per annum at the G-5 level, along with an attractive benefits package in accordance with the policies of the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC).
