Job Overview: The UN Volunteer will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Protection Officer and will be involved in various protection tasks that support UNHCR Pakistan's strategic operational and protection objectives. This role is designed to enhance the professional development of the volunteer in areas relevant to the Programme for Global Human Resource Development for Peacebuilding and Development. The volunteer will assist in developing and implementing community-based protection strategies, promote refugee participation in assessments and decision-making processes, and support individual case management for protection issues such as gender-based violence and child protection. The position also involves liaising with partners for protection activities, coordinating with the Protection Working Group, and ensuring effective information management within the Protection Sector. The volunteer will contribute to legal analysis, policy briefs, and advocacy materials, and will be responsible for drafting reports and correspondence for meetings and missions. This role is integral to enhancing the protection delivery for refugees and ensuring their rights are upheld.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the UN Volunteer include: assisting in the development and implementation of protection strategies; promoting refugee participation in assessments and decision-making; supporting individual case management for protection issues; liaising with partners for protection activities; engaging in coordination for the Protection Working Group; promoting the implementation of the AGD policy; providing support for operational planning and coordination; ensuring effective information management within the Protection Sector; contributing to legal analysis and advocacy materials; drafting reports and correspondence; and liaising with external partners and local organizations. Additionally, the volunteer is expected to strengthen their understanding of volunteerism, participate in UNV activities, reflect on their voluntary actions, contribute articles for publications, assist with the UNV Buddy Programme, and promote online volunteering.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a strong commitment to the principles of volunteerism and a willingness to engage with local communities. Candidates should possess excellent communication skills, adaptability, and a client-oriented approach. A commitment to continuous learning and professionalism is essential, along with the ability to work effectively in teams and respect for diversity. Knowledge sharing and planning and organizing skills are also important for this role.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have some experience in protection work, social work, or community engagement, particularly in contexts involving refugees or displaced populations. Experience in case management, advocacy, or working with vulnerable groups is highly desirable. Familiarity with international refugee law and human rights frameworks will be an advantage.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of UNHCR. Knowledge of local languages, such as Urdu or Pashto, is considered an asset and will enhance communication with refugees and local partners.
Additional Notes: This position is a volunteer role under the UNV program, and it is expected to be full-time. The living conditions in Pakistan, particularly in Islamabad, are generally good, with access to health facilities and amenities. However, volunteers should be aware of the cultural norms and dress codes in Pakistan, especially regarding modesty.
