Job Overview: The Health Manager, UN Clinic Physician, plays a crucial role in providing medical services to UN staff and their dependents in Sierra Leone. This position is vital for ensuring the health and well-being of UN personnel, particularly in a context where health and security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security hazards are prevalent. The incumbent will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the UN Clinic, managing medical staff, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality medical services. The role requires the physician to be available for emergencies outside of regular working hours, emphasizing the importance of being on-call and responsive to urgent medical needs. The Health Manager will also engage in preventive health outreach, occupational health policies, and emergency response coordination, making this position integral to the overall health strategy of the UN in Sierra Leone.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Medical Officer will have a wide range of responsibilities, including:
Clinic Service Management: Attend the UN Clinic full-time, respond to emergencies, conduct medical examinations, provide health education, and ensure the clinic remains functional during emergencies.
Medical Administration: Liaise with medical facilities for evacuations, manage medical records, and ensure compliance with UN policies regarding medical clearances and sick leave.
Supervisory Administration: Lead the medical service team, manage staff performance, and ensure compliance with healthcare standards.
Advisory, Liaison, and Representation: Advise senior management on healthcare matters, represent the medical service in various forums, and conduct health education campaigns. The incumbent will also be responsible for training relief doctors and maintaining relationships with local medical facilities.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a first-level university degree qualifying for registration as a licensed medical practitioner (MD, MBBS, MBChB, or equivalent) and current unrestricted registration with a medical licensing authority. Proficiency in MS Office and familiarity with medical record systems is essential. Additionally, candidates should have a minimum of five years of clinical experience, preferably in internal or family medicine, and two years of experience in occupational health. Managerial experience in the medical field, including budgeting and supervisory responsibilities, is also required. Valid certifications in advanced trauma life support and emergency care are mandatory, along with experience in mass casualty coordination and medical evacuations.
Educational Background: A first-level university degree that qualifies for registration as a licensed medical practitioner is required. This includes degrees such as MD, MBBS, MBChB, or equivalent. Candidates must also have current unrestricted registration with the medical licensing authority of one of the Member States of the United Nations. Proficiency in MS Office applications is necessary, and familiarity with medical record systems like EarthMed is advantageous.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of five years of progressively responsible clinical experience in medicine, with a focus on internal or family medicine. Candidates should have completed a residency or internship in a medical specialty and possess two years of experience in occupational health. Experience with international organizations and field deployments is essential, along with two years of managerial experience in the medical field, which includes budgeting and resource management. Valid certifications in advanced trauma life support and emergency care are required, as well as experience in handling acute emergencies and medical evacuations.
Languages: Fluency in English is required, as well as fluency in the national language of the duty station, which is Krio. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not mandatory for this position.
Additional Notes: This is a full-time position based in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The incumbent is expected to be available for emergencies outside of regular working hours and is not permitted to engage in additional private work during the contract period. The role involves travel within the country to monitor health conditions and medical facilities, and assessments of medical facilities outside Sierra Leone may also be required.
