Job Overview:

Interns will work full-time, either remotely or in-person, and are expected to contribute to various projects within the Division on Investment and Enterprise, specifically in the Investment Policies Branch. The internship will last for six months, tentatively starting in January 202
  • Interns will be exposed to UNCTAD's core activities, including research, intergovernmental meetings, and technical assistance to governments, particularly those in developing countries. The role requires a commitment to the ideals of the United Nations and an eagerness to learn about investment policies and international agreements.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Interns will have a wide range of responsibilities, including assisting in the collection of data on bilateral investment treaties (BITs) and treaties with investment provisions (TIPs), as well as investor-State dispute settlement (ISDS) cases. They will conduct research on investment policy trends and developments, update databases, and assist in preparing materials for intergovernmental meetings. Interns will also help organize capacity-building activities, proofread publications, and manage content for the Investment Policy Hub website. Additionally, they will be expected to adhere to UN regulations and maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive information.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must be either enrolled in or have completed a graduate program or the final year of a bachelor's degree. They should possess strong computer skills, a keen interest in the work of the United Nations, and the ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. No prior work experience is required, but a field of study related to the internship is necessary. Interns should demonstrate a commitment to the ideals of the UN and possess the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Educational Background:
Candidates must have completed or be enrolled in a graduate program (second university degree or equivalent) or the final year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level). A background in international relations, economics, law, or a related field is preferred, as it aligns closely with the responsibilities of the internship.

Experience:
While no specific work experience is required, candidates should have relevant academic training or coursework that can contribute to their internship experience. The internship is designed for students or recent graduates, so prior professional experience is not a prerequisite.

Languages:
Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory for this internship. Knowledge of Arabic is considered an asset, as it may enhance communication and understanding within the UN's diverse environment.

Additional Notes:
This internship is unpaid, and all costs related to travel, accommodation, and living expenses must be covered by the intern. Interns are expected to work full-time, five days a week, for the duration of the internship. The position may be conducted remotely, but if in-person, interns must have a valid visa. Interns should be aware that there is no expectation of employment with the UN following the internship, and they are not eligible to apply for professional positions within the UN for six months after completing the internship.
