Job Overview:
The position of Computing engineer" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Technical Engineer at CERN involves a deep engagement with data systems, focusing on the maintenance and improvement of both legacy databases and modern reporting platforms. The successful candidate will join an agile and self-organized team of engineers within the Business Computing (BC) group, specifically supporting Finance and Procurement operations. The primary mission of this role is to design, optimize, and operate reporting and data solutions that facilitate evidence-based decision-making across CERN. This includes extracting, transforming, and visualizing data to create insightful reports and dashboards that meet the needs of various stakeholders. The role requires a proactive approach to understanding business requirements and ensuring data consistency and usability, making it essential for the candidate to collaborate effectively with business users, analysts, and developers.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Computing Technical Engineer include:
  • Extracting, transforming, and visualizing data in reports, dashboards, and analytics platforms to support decision-making processes.
  • Interacting with relational databases, primarily Oracle, using SQL and PL/SQL for data manipulation and retrieval.
  • Developing, maintaining, and testing data models and ETL/ELT pipelines that support CERN's financial and procurement systems.
  • Maintaining, supporting, and enhancing existing legacy solutions while contributing to their modernization efforts.
  • Collaborating with business users, analysts, and developers to gather requirements and ensure data consistency and usability.
  • Providing 3rd-level support, including troubleshooting, maintenance, and consultancy to business users, ensuring that their data needs are met effectively.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess excellent knowledge of SQL and relational databases, with a strong ability to write, optimize, and debug complex queries. Familiarity with data visualization or analytics tools such as Power BI, R, or Python-based dashboards is essential. Additionally, exposure to data pipeline concepts and tools such as SQL, DBT, or Python for data processing is required. A solid understanding of data modeling principles, including dimensional and star schema design, semantic models, and data warehouses, is also necessary. Candidates should demonstrate an interest in providing end-user support, troubleshooting, escalation, and issue resolution, as well as an awareness of Finance and Procurement processes or a willingness to learn about these business domains. Experience working in group projects, ideally in collaborative or Agile environments, is highly valued.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field. Candidates must have graduated within the last two years and should not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract. It is important to note that applicants without a university degree or those holding a PhD are not eligible for this position.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation. This experience should be relevant to the field of computer science or data engineering, demonstrating the ability to work with data systems and support business processes effectively.

Languages:
The position requires proficiency in spoken and written English, as this is the primary language of communication at CERN. Additionally, candidates should have a commitment to learning French, which is beneficial for interacting with local stakeholders and enhancing communication within the organization.

Additional Notes:
This position is offered on a contract basis for a duration of 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months.
