Job Overview:
The UN News Stringer position is designed to produce and submit multimedia content in Portuguese, enhancing the work of UN News Language Units. The role involves creating a maximum of twenty approved packages of multimedia content that reflect local voices and field-based storytelling on a wide range of UN activities. This includes topics such as the SDGs, human rights, climate issues, health, gender equity, youth engagement, and artificial intelligence. The content produced will be used for various platforms, including the UN's website and social media channels, aiming to engage and inform the target audience effectively. The position requires collaboration with the relevant Unit Chief to plan and produce quality multimedia content, ensuring that it aligns with UN priorities and campaigns.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Individual Contractor will be responsible for several key duties, including:
  • Liaising with the relevant Unit Chief to discuss and plan the production of quality multimedia content on various issues, ensuring that field-based narratives align with UN priorities.
  • Pitching story ideas and agreeing on timelines and content with the commissioning office, utilizing diverse storytelling approaches suitable for news and social media platforms.
  • Researching content from credible sources, writing stories and scripts, and creating multimedia stories (audio, video, photo, text) that reflect local angles and focus on beneficiaries and target audiences.
  • Coordinating technical arrangements and organizing interviews in the countries of assignment as needed.
  • Adhering to UN News guidelines to ensure editorial clarity and sound political judgment, including due diligence regarding permissions and copyright.
  • Demonstrating well-rounded experience in broadcast/digital journalism and multimedia production, with a strong emphasis on video production skills.
  • Providing references and work samples upon request, and ensuring compliance with any registration or accreditation requirements set by national/local authorities.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. A first-level university degree in communication, journalism, video production, or a related field is desirable. Additionally, a minimum of two years of experience in broadcast/digital journalism in the assigned language(s) is required. Candidates should have experience in producing multimedia features, video production, filming, and editing video material. Experience in recording and editing audio material, as well as digital content publishing and incorporating photos and graphics, is also desirable.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a high school diploma or equivalent as a minimum requirement. A first-level university degree in communication, journalism, video production, or a related field is considered an asset and is highly desirable for candidates seeking this role.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of two years of experience in broadcast or digital journalism, specifically in the assigned language(s). Candidates should have a comprehensive understanding of multimedia production processes, including experience in creating a full range of multimedia features. Experience in video production, including filming and editing, as well as audio recording and editing, is also essential. Familiarity with digital content publishing and the integration of visual elements such as photos and graphics is highly valued.

Languages:
Fluency in Portuguese and English is mandatory for this position, as these are the primary languages used in the role. Knowledge of other UN official languages is considered desirable and may enhance a candidate's application, given the multilingual nature of the UN's operations.

Additional Notes:
This position is located in the UN News Section of the News and Content Branch within the News and Media Division (NMD) of the Department of Global Communications (DGC). The contract duration is for a maximum of six months. The role is designed for individuals who can work independently and collaboratively, reporting directly to the Unit Chiefs.
