Job Overview:
The position of Legal Drafter (Individual Contractor) is focused on providing specialized drafting assistance for a project concerning the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant's (ISIL) system of detention. This project is part of the International Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM), which aims to assist in the investigation and prosecution of serious crimes under international law committed in Syria since March 201
  • The contractor will be responsible for drafting a final legal-analytical report that will support accountability efforts for victims of core international crimes in Syria. The role requires close collaboration with the ISIL line of inquiry team and involves extensive legal analysis, documentation review, and adherence to international legal standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The contractor's duties will include reviewing extensive documentation from the IIIM’s central repository, synthesizing materials into factual findings and legal analysis, ensuring compliance with legal frameworks, producing drafts of the report, implementing feedback, and assisting in the finalization of a shareable version of the report. The contractor will also engage in data mapping, field investigations, and analysis of data related to ISIL crimes, while collaborating with various stakeholders including potential witnesses and jurisdictional partners. This role may involve dealing with distressing material and requires a commitment to the project’s objectives of supporting accountability for serious crimes.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master’s or Advanced degree in Law. Alternatively, a first-level university degree in Law with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. A minimum of seven years of legal experience is required, including at least five years of legal drafting experience related to international criminal accountability. Proven expertise in drafting complex legal materials and conducting extensive research and analysis in international criminal cases is essential. Experience specifically related to the Syrian conflict and ISIL-related crimes is also required.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a Master’s or Advanced degree in Law. A first-level university degree in Law may be considered if accompanied by additional relevant work experience. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of international law and criminal accountability.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of seven years of legal experience, with a strong emphasis on at least five years of experience in legal drafting related to international criminal accountability. Candidates should have a proven track record of working on international criminal cases and should be familiar with the legal frameworks governing such matters.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Proficiency in French is also beneficial, as it is another working language of the organization. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively in both languages to fulfill the responsibilities of the role.
