Job Posting Organization:
The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) is a United Nations entity established to promote dialogue and understanding among different cultures and societies. UNAOC aims to build bridges between communities, reduce hostility, and foster mutual respect and harmony. The organization operates through five main pillars: Education, Youth, Migration, Media, and Women as peace mediators. UNAOC serves as a facilitator and convener, bringing together various sectors of society to strengthen intercultural and interreligious dialogue. Job Overview:
The Programme Officer will play a crucial role in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and projects that specifically address human rights and combat Islamophobia. This position requires monitoring and analyzing program development, reviewing relevant documents, and proposing corrective actions as necessary. The officer will provide technical and operational advice for partnership initiatives with both State and non-State actors, ensuring that programming aligns with broader UN strategies on tolerance and human rights. The role also involves preparing reports for the General Assembly, conducting research on human rights issues, and assisting in policy development related to religious intolerance. The Programme Officer will be responsible for outreach activities, training workshops, and data analysis to support the organization's mission.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Programme Officer will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Participating in the development, implementation, and evaluation of assigned programs/projects, focusing on human rights and combating Islamophobia.
  • Monitoring and analyzing program/project development and implementation, identifying problems, and proposing corrective actions.
  • Providing technical and operational advice for partnership initiatives on programming to address Islamophobia.
  • Assisting in the coordination and preparation of reports to the General Assembly regarding the implementation of relevant resolutions.
  • Conducting research and analysis on human rights issues, ensuring integration of human rights considerations into UN efforts.
  • Assisting in policy development and contributing to evaluations and research activities.
  • Designing data collection tools and analyzing responses to prepare conclusions.
  • Preparing written outputs such as background papers, reports, and publications.
  • Supporting consultative meetings and conferences, including proposing agenda topics and preparing documents. 1
  • Conducting outreach activities and training workshops on human rights and Islamophobia. 1
  • Coordinating budget and funding activities, preparing related documents and reports. 1
  • Collecting and analyzing data on combating Islamophobia and human rights indicators, using data visualization for insights.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong understanding of theories and concepts related to Islamophobia and human rights. They should have the ability to evaluate international political situations and translate UN mandates into operational activities. The role requires excellent drafting skills for policy guidance and briefings, as well as the ability to conduct independent research and analysis. Candidates should demonstrate professionalism, effective communication skills, and the ability to manage conflicting priorities. They must also show a commitment to the values of the United Nations, including integrity and respect for diversity.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in international relations, political science, public administration, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project or program management, human rights, or a related area is required. Additionally, at least two years of experience in providing technical assistance and delivering capacity-building activities through workshops and seminars is necessary. Experience in data analytics, digital innovation, and designing programs focused on human rights and combating discrimination is desirable. Familiarity with the United Nations Common System or similar multilateral institutions is also beneficial.

Languages:
English is required at UN Level III for reading, writing, listening, and speaking. French is also a working language of the UN. Arabic is desirable at UN Level II for reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in these languages as per the UN Language Framework.
