Job Description

Job Overview:
The intern will be part of the Strategy and Transformation Office at the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt, Germany. This office is responsible for formulating and preparing strategies in collaboration with the Director of Operations and the management team. The intern will support the Directorate in its overarching coordination function, which includes leading the evolution of the Directorate’s strategy, establishing innovation governance, coordinating strategic planning, and fostering partnerships with academia and industry. The intern will work on projects that align with the goal of maintaining innovation in mission operations and enhancing the competitiveness of the European space industry. The internship will last for six months, during which the intern will be expected to deliver projects that contribute to these objectives, tailored to their skills and interests.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern's responsibilities will include: assisting in the formulation and communication of the Directorate’s overall strategy; leading initiatives related to innovation governance, such as organizing innovation cups; coordinating the strategic planning and implementation of research and technology activities; fostering cooperation with external partners, including other space agencies and industry; developing business intelligence by monitoring and analyzing the socio-economic impacts of the Directorate’s operations; managing governance processes related to mission operations infrastructure; and supporting budget management and investment planning. The intern will also be expected to engage in continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to the overall efficiency of the Directorate's operations.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be university students, preferably at the master’s level, and must be able to demonstrate enrollment at their university for the entire duration of the internship. A background in engineering is not essential, but candidates with a STEM background or an MBA are encouraged to apply. The position requires a good command of English or French, with knowledge of another ESA member state language considered an asset. Candidates should possess strong analytical skills, the ability to work collaboratively, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Educational Background:
The ideal candidate should be pursuing a degree at the master’s level in a relevant field. This could include areas such as business administration, engineering, or other STEM disciplines. The candidate must provide proof of enrollment at their university for the entire duration of the internship, ensuring that they can commit to the full six-month period.

Experience:
While specific prior experience is not mandatory, candidates should demonstrate relevant academic knowledge and skills that align with the responsibilities of the internship. Experience in project management, strategic planning, or innovation processes would be beneficial but is not required. The agency values diverse experiences and perspectives, and candidates from various academic backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Languages:
The working languages of the European Space Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these languages is mandatory for the position. Additionally, knowledge of another language from an ESA member state is considered advantageous, as it may enhance communication and collaboration within the agency's diverse environment.
