Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. With a mission to probe the fundamental structure of the universe, CERN employs physicists and engineers who work with the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments. The organization operates in multiple countries and has a diverse workforce, which is central to its success. CERN is committed to diversity and inclusion, making it an integral part of its mission since its foundation.

Job Overview:
The position of Survey Technician involves working within a team of surveyors at CERN, where you will be responsible for performing high-precision measurements for the metrology and alignment of components installed in accelerators, beam transfer lines, and physics experiments. The role requires the use of advanced laser tracker technology to carry out metrology measurements at all stages of the assembly of accelerator components. You will also be tasked with aligning various components throughout the CERN complex and conducting 'as-built' measurements of tunnels and buildings using laser scanning technology. Additionally, you will participate in in-house software test validation and provide feedback to improve survey field procedures, methods, and software. This position is ideal for individuals with a strong desire to learn and grow professionally in the field of surveying and industrial metrology, particularly those with a keen interest in high-precision measurements.

Duties and Responsibilities:
As a Survey Technician, your primary duties will include:
  • Performing metrology measurements at all stages of the assembly of accelerator components using laser tracker technology.
  • Carrying out the alignment of various components throughout the CERN complex.
  • Conducting 'as-built' measurements of tunnels and buildings using laser scanner technology.
  • Participating in the validation of in-house software tests and providing constructive feedback to enhance survey field procedures, methods, and software.
  • Performing calibration, checking, and testing of survey instrumentation and accessories.
  • Organizing and preparing in-field work to ensure efficient operations.
  • Utilizing survey instruments such as theodolites, total stations, and levels effectively.
  • Engaging in continuous learning and professional development to enhance skills and knowledge in surveying and metrology.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for the Survey Technician position, candidates must meet the following requirements:
  • Initial experience in surveying or industrial metrology, including familiarity with the instruments and methods used in this field.
  • A strong desire to learn and grow professionally in the area of high-precision measurements.
  • A curious mindset and a commitment to developing skills in the field.
  • Proficiency in using survey instruments (theodolites, total stations, levels) and laser scanning technology.
  • Basic knowledge and application of survey data acquisition and treatment software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learning the basics of the other language.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a general secondary education diploma as their highest educational qualification. It is important to note that applicants with a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree are not eligible for this position. The educational background should ideally include coursework or training related to surveying or a related field to ensure a foundational understanding of the principles and practices involved in the role.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in the field of Survey Technician or a related area. This experience should be relevant to the duties and responsibilities outlined in the job description, demonstrating a practical understanding of surveying techniques and methodologies.

Languages:
The mandatory language for this position is either spoken and written English or French. Candidates must be committed to learning the basics of the other language to facilitate effective communication within the team and organization. Proficiency in both languages is considered an asset but is not a requirement for eligibility.
