Job Overview: The GenAI Individual Contractor position is focused on enhancing the operational capacity of UNHCR's Helpline in Iran, which serves as a critical communication channel for forcibly displaced persons (FDSPs). The contractor will be involved in piloting and validating AI-enabled solutions that aim to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the Helpline. This role is particularly significant given Iran's status as one of the largest refugee-hosting countries, with a substantial population of refugees requiring support. The contractor will work on developing an AI-supported system that can handle a high volume of generic queries, allowing human agents to focus on more complex cases that require personal interaction and protection support. The position requires a strong understanding of data science, AI applications, and the specific needs of the refugee population in Iran, particularly in terms of language and cultural sensitivity.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the GenAI Individual Contractor include:
Preparing datasets to train the AI model, ensuring that the data is relevant and comprehensive.
Testing and validating AI-generated responses to ensure they meet the needs of callers.
Reviewing AI model outputs for accuracy, clarity, and consistency with UNHCR's terminology and protection-sensitive language.
Identifying errors or gaps in AI outputs and providing constructive feedback to improve the system.
Assisting in the preparation of training and validation datasets to enhance AI model performance.
Documenting issues, findings, and recommendations to guide the refinement of the AI system.
Collaborating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders to ensure effective communication and implementation of AI solutions.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a graduate degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field. They should have strong coding skills in Python and SQL, as well as a keen interest in applying artificial intelligence within humanitarian contexts. Familiarity with natural language processing (NLP) in Farsi and/or Dari, as well as experience with speech-to-text and AI chatbots, is highly desirable. Attention to detail and the ability to validate outputs against established standards are crucial. Strong communication skills are necessary for effective collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
Educational Background: A graduate degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or another data-related engineering field is required for this position. This educational background provides the necessary foundation for understanding complex data systems and AI technologies, which are essential for the role.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years of work experience in AI or a related field. This experience is critical for ensuring that the contractor can effectively contribute to the development and validation of AI solutions for the Helpline, as well as navigate the challenges associated with implementing technology in a humanitarian context.
Languages: Proficiency in English and Farsi (both written and spoken) is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of Afghan Dari is considered a desirable asset, as it may enhance communication with the refugee population served by UNHCR.
Additional Notes: This position is classified as an Individual Contractor role, which is full-time and entry-level support. The contract duration is set for 6 months, preferably from November 2025 to April 2026, with a monthly fee of 900 USD. The position is not remote and is based in Tehran, Iran. The contractor will be expected to work closely with the Helpline team to ensure that AI solutions are implemented responsibly and effectively, in line with data protection standards.
