Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research organization established to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. It employs physicists and engineers who utilize the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter. CERN has been at the forefront of particle physics research since its inception and operates in multiple countries, with a mission to advance knowledge and foster collaboration among scientists globally. The organization is known for its commitment to diversity and inclusion, welcoming applications from all Member States and Associate Member States.

Job Overview:
The position of Senior Geotechnical Engineer at CERN involves significant responsibilities in the design and construction of underground civil engineering structures, particularly for the Future Circular Collider (FCC). This role requires a senior engineer with proven expertise in managing large-scale contracts and the ability to work independently on technically complex projects. The FCC is a groundbreaking initiative with a circumference of 91 kilometers, located in an underground complex that extends up to 500 meters below ground in the Geneva Basin. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake numerical studies, oversee geotechnical work by external consultants, and prepare technical specifications necessary for major consultancy contracts. Collaboration with other disciplines is essential to develop robust civil engineering solutions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Geotechnical Engineer will be responsible for all geotechnical aspects related to the FCC project. Key duties include:
  • Conducting numerical studies to support preliminary designs and optioneering studies for the FCC underground structures.
  • Overseeing and critically assessing geotechnical work performed by external consultants, contractors, and specialist advisors.
  • Preparing geotechnical technical specifications, including a geotechnical baseline report (GBR), for major consultancy contracts related to the design and construction of significant underground and surface structures.
  • Managing contracts for consultancy and site investigations to gather necessary geotechnical data for subsequent design work.
  • Collaborating closely with the civil engineering team and providing expert support in geotechnical engineering.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, or a related field. The role requires extensive experience in underground civil/geotechnical engineering, including proven capabilities in writing technical documentation for site investigations and the design of underground structures. Additionally, candidates should have experience managing contracts for design and site investigation services for large civil engineering projects.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, or a closely related field is required for this position. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered in lieu of formal education.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have extensive experience in the relevant fields of underground civil/geotechnical engineering. This includes managing all life-cycle processes associated with the design and construction of underground structures such as tunnels, shafts, and caverns. Proven experience in writing technical documentation and managing contracts for large civil engineering projects is essential.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, with a commitment to learn French being a valuable asset for the position. Proficiency in French will enhance collaboration within the team and with local stakeholders.

Additional Notes:
This position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of applying for an indefinite position subject to certain conditions. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the job offers hybrid flexibility. A valid driving license is required for this role. The job grade is classified as 6-7, and the reference for this position is SCE-PPM-2025-208-LD, specifically within the field of Civil Engineering.
