Job Overview:
The Radiographic Technologist (On Call) will play a crucial role in the IOM Health Assessment Programme by processing screening X-rays for refugees and immigrants. This position requires the individual to work under the supervision of the Sub-Regional Health Assessment Program Coordinator and the Senior Radiologic Technologist, while also receiving technical guidance from the IOM Teleradiology Center. The primary function of this role is to ensure high-quality chest X-ray images are taken in accordance with IOM and international standards. The technologist will be responsible for explaining procedures to applicants, preparing examination rooms, and ensuring proper identification and data entry. The role also involves applying radiation protection procedures, maintaining equipment, and contributing to the overall workflow and quality assurance in the Radiology Unit. The technologist will be expected to communicate effectively with physicians and radiologists, ensuring timely and accurate reporting of X-ray results.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Radiographic Technologist include:
  • Taking high-quality chest X-ray images as requested by physicians and/or radiologists, adhering to IOM and international standards.
  • Explaining X-ray procedures to applicants and addressing any questions they may have.
  • Preparing equipment and examination rooms, ensuring proper ID checks and data entry.
  • Applying appropriate radiographic techniques and radiation protection measures during X-ray procedures.
  • Processing digital images on CR/DR machines, reviewing image quality, and repeating images when necessary.
  • Reporting urgent information to radiologists or physicians.
  • Maintaining high-quality standards in the Radiology Unit and training staff involved in X-ray procedures.
  • Ensuring radiation safety for applicants, staff, and the public.
  • Conducting regular quality assurance checks on X-ray machines and coordinating maintenance services. 1
  • Optimizing workflow in the Radiology Unit and contributing to statistical reporting on operational activities. 1
  • Communicating with radiologists and Teleradiology Centers for reading chest X-rays and providing reports to physicians. 1
  • Implementing infection control measures and maintaining a clean work environment. 1
  • Suggesting improvements for quality, speed, or safety of radiological procedures. 1
  • Performing any other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires the following qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Radiologic Technology from an accredited institution, with compliance to national regulations.
  • A valid license to practice Radiography in South Africa.
  • For Bachelor’s degree holders, a minimum of three years of working experience in radiography, particularly in chest X-ray procedures. For Diploma holders, a minimum of five years of experience is required.
  • Knowledge and experience in radiographic techniques, procedures, safety, and quality management processes.
  • Familiarity with digital radiography machines and radiology information systems.
  • Experience in health assessment programs and screening chest X-rays is preferred.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Radiologic Technology from an accredited academic institution. The educational background should align with the national regulations governing the practice of radiography in South Africa, ensuring that the candidate is equipped with the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to perform the duties of the position effectively.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have a minimum of three years of relevant working experience if holding a Bachelor’s degree, or five years if holding a Diploma. This experience should be specifically in the field of radiography, with a strong emphasis on chest X-ray procedures. Familiarity with health assessment programs and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment are also essential.

Languages:
Fluency in English, both oral and written, is mandatory for this position. Additionally, proficiency in common local languages spoken in South Africa is considered an asset, as it will facilitate communication with applicants and enhance the overall effectiveness of the role.

Additional Notes:
The position is classified as an on-call consultancy role, meaning that the consultant will be engaged as needed rather than on a full-time basis. The appointment is contingent upon funding confirmation and the candidate's medical fitness for the role. IOM provides coverage against occupational accidents and illnesses under its Compensation Plan, but consultants are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational incidents. The organization adheres to a zero-tolerance policy regarding misconduct and does not charge any fees during the recruitment process.
