Job Overview:
The Economic Affairs Officer will play a crucial role in supporting intergovernmental bodies focused on road traffic safety and transport innovations. The incumbent will be responsible for providing secretariat services to key groups, including the Group of Experts on the European Agreement concerning the Work of Crews of Vehicles engaged in International Road Transport (AETR) and the Global Forum for Road Traffic Safety (WP.1). This position requires a strong understanding of road transport issues and the ability to manage projects related to road safety, ensuring alignment with UN sustainable development goals. The officer will also represent the secretariat at various conferences and meetings, contributing to the visibility and impact of the organization's work in road traffic safety.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide secretariat services to intergovernmental bodies, including preparation of documentation, agendas, and reports for meetings, as well as servicing these meetings and undertaking follow-up actions.
  • Assist governments and relevant bodies in updating and implementing UN/ECE legal instruments, resolutions, and recommendations.
  • Act as project manager for analytical work and capacity building in road traffic safety, including project design, implementation, and fundraising.
  • Contribute to global road safety initiatives, promoting accession to and implementation of UN road safety conventions.
  • Represent the secretariat at conferences and meetings, both within and outside the ECE.
  • Ensure visibility of the work and achievements in road traffic safety.
  • Supervise junior staff as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires in-depth knowledge of road transport issues, particularly related to road traffic safety, infrastructure, and transport services. Candidates must demonstrate project management experience and the ability to organize and provide secretariat services for meetings at both national and international levels. A strong commitment to gender perspectives and equal participation in all areas of work is essential. Educational Background:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics, law, civil engineering, or a related field. Further specialization in transport is desirable. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
At least seven years of progressively responsible experience in national or international administration or organizations dealing with road traffic safety or related fields is required. Experience in servicing international meetings and drafting meeting reports is also desirable, indicating a strong background in administrative functions and international collaboration.

Languages:
The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French. For this position, proficiency in English is required, while knowledge of either French or Russian is desirable. Candidates should refer to the UN Language Framework for the minimum required level for each skill in these languages.
