This role focuses on integrating digital solutions into agriculture and food systems programs, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The Digital Specialist will provide technical leadership and operational support, working closely with various teams within the World Bank to enhance agricultural productivity and resilience through digital innovations. The position emphasizes the importance of digital technologies, such as AI and geospatial analytics, in transforming agricultural practices and ensuring that smallholder farmers and rural communities benefit from these advancements. The Digital Specialist will also contribute to the development of policies and strategies that align with the digital transformation goals of the organization.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Digital Specialist will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including:
Providing technical inputs and assessing digital agriculture solutions, such as precision agriculture tools and mobile-enabled advisory services.
Supporting the evaluation and piloting of small AI models for agriculture, including pest detection and localized weather forecasting.
Contributing to the development of national agriculture strategies and investment programs that incorporate digital solutions.
Collaborating with Bank teams to integrate digital agriculture applications into broader agricultural and rural development operations.
Assisting in the monitoring and evaluation of digital agriculture initiatives to assess their technical performance and impact.
Generating knowledge through case studies and technical notes on digital agriculture and small AI applications.
Engaging with technology providers and agribusinesses to strengthen local innovation ecosystems and gather insights on emerging solutions.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in agriculture, agricultural economics, agronomy, environmental sciences, data science, or a related discipline. Additionally, a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in digital agriculture or agriculture sector transformation is required, along with a proven track record in assessing, designing, or implementing digital agriculture solutions in LMICs. Knowledge of emerging technologies such as small AI, IoT, and geospatial analytics, as well as familiarity with agriculture policy frameworks and rural development strategies, is essential. Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills are also necessary for this role.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master’s degree in relevant fields such as agriculture, agricultural economics, agronomy, environmental sciences, or data science. This advanced education is crucial for understanding the complexities of digital agriculture and its impact on food systems and rural development.
