Job Posting Organization:
The internship is offered by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), which was established to promote economic and social development in the region. Job Overview:
The internship position is located within the Conference Management Section (CMS) of the Resource Management and Service Development Division (RMSDD) at ESCWA. The intern will report directly to a designated supervisor and senior staff within the CMS, with overall supervision provided by the Chief of CMS. The primary function of this internship is to support the translation and proofreading of documents related to a wide array of subjects handled by ESCWA, including political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific, and technical matters. The intern will engage in research activities to gather necessary information and ensure that all documents meet the clarity, accuracy, and consistency standards set by ESCWA and the United Nations. This role is crucial for maintaining the quality of documentation and communication within the organization, and it provides an excellent opportunity for interns to gain hands-on experience in a professional international environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Translate documents covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by ESCWA, ensuring that the translations are accurate and contextually appropriate.
  • Conduct necessary research using all available information sources to support translation and documentation efforts.
  • Proofread and review documents in both English and Arabic, focusing on clarity, spelling, grammar, consistency, and factual accuracy in accordance with ESCWA guidelines and United Nations manuals.
  • Prepare designed outputs as per established guidelines and undertake any other language support functions, including supervised editing.
  • Perform additional related duties as required by the supervisor or senior staff.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for this internship, applicants must meet the following conditions:
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or be in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent), or have graduated with a university degree as defined above.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
  • Exhibit the ability to successfully interact with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing willingness to understand and tolerate differing opinions and views. No previous work experience is required for this internship.

Educational Background:
Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate program or in the final year of their undergraduate studies, or have recently graduated with a relevant degree. This educational background is essential to ensure that interns possess the necessary knowledge and skills to contribute effectively to the work of ESCWA.

Experience:
No prior work experience is required for this internship position. However, candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in the work of the United Nations and possess relevant academic qualifications that align with the responsibilities of the internship.

Languages:
Fluency in English and Arabic is required for this position, as these are the working languages of ESCWA. Knowledge of French is considered desirable but not mandatory. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas: speaking, reading, writing, and understanding. Knowledge of a language is defined as a rating of 'confident' in at least two of the four areas.

Additional Notes:
This internship is expected to last for a duration of two months, and interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Additionally, interns must provide proof of valid medical insurance coverage for the entire duration of the internship and submit a medical certificate of good health prior to starting the internship. The United Nations does not charge any fees during the recruitment process, and candidates should be aware of their visa requirements before accepting the internship offer. Flexible working arrangements may be available, contingent upon written agreement by the receiving entity.
