The intern will work under the direct supervision of an Economic Affairs Officer at the Southern Regional Office for Southern Africa (SRO-SA). The primary focus will be on supporting the implementation of technical assistance projects, which may involve a variety of tasks tailored to specific project needs. Interns will be expected to engage in activities such as preparing project calendars, assisting in the organization of workshops, and contributing to the development of substantive documents. This role is ideal for those interested in gaining insights into the workings of international organizations and contributing to meaningful projects that aim to foster inclusive industrialization and support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a wide range of tasks that are crucial for the successful execution of projects. Key responsibilities include:
Preparing and updating a calendar of activities for the project, ensuring timelines are adhered to;
Assisting in the preparation of substantive documents and notes for workshops and meetings, including concept notes and agendas;
Planning and organizing workshops and meetings, which involves drafting invitations, following up for participation, and identifying suitable panelists;
Servicing workshops and meetings by taking notes and drafting speeches;
Assisting in the preparation of terms of reference for consultants;
Conducting literature reviews and research on inclusive industrialization and MSMEs;
Supporting data collection efforts to track indicators for the inclusive industrialization database;
Contributing to the development and updating of country strategies and profiles;
Shadowing the data and statistics focal point officer; 1
Assisting in establishing necessary databases for the project; 1
Providing innovative ideas to enhance project outputs; 1
Identifying suitable methodologies for project delivery; 1
Performing administrative tasks in consultation with administrative staff; 1
Preparing communication materials for disseminating project outputs; 1
Executing any ad-hoc requests from senior staff to ensure timely project deliverables.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for this internship, applicants must meet specific criteria:
Enrollment in or completion of a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent) or the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level);
For those who have completed their degrees, they must be awaiting results or have graduated within the last three months. Preferred fields of study include economics, international economics, agriculture, natural resources, industrial economics, economic policy, international trade, and regional integration. Additional qualifications include proficiency in standard software applications, a research background in industrial economics or related fields, and familiarity with economic software and data analysis tools.
Educational Background: Candidates should have a strong educational background relevant to the internship. This includes being enrolled in or having completed a graduate program or the final year of an undergraduate program in fields such as economics, international economics, agriculture, or related disciplines. The internship is particularly suited for those who have a keen interest in economic policy and development.
Experience: While prior work experience is not mandatory for this internship, any relevant experience in research, economic analysis, or project management will be considered an asset. Interns should demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt to the dynamic environment of the United Nations.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations. A working knowledge of French is desirable, and knowledge of any other United Nations language will be considered an advantage.
Additional Notes: This internship is hybrid in nature and is expected to last for six months. It is important to note that interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations, and all costs related to travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Zambia may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization.
