Job Overview:
The Forestry Officer (Halting Deforestation, Degradation and Emissions) position is integral to the FAO's efforts in combating deforestation and degradation, particularly in the Africa region. This role involves providing technical and policy expertise to support the planning, development, and implementation of various projects aimed at halting deforestation and reducing emissions. The officer will work closely with multidisciplinary teams and will be responsible for conducting research and analysis on relevant technical, social, economic, and environmental issues. The position requires collaboration with other divisions and offices within FAO to promote best practices and ensure effective capacity development activities. The officer will also engage in resource mobilization efforts to support the FAO's strategic objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of the Forestry Officer include conducting comprehensive research and analysis on various aspects related to forestry and climate change, producing technical documents and reports, and providing support for assessments and field projects. The officer will collaborate in the development of improved tools and systems, participate in multidisciplinary teams, and lead working groups to promote knowledge sharing. Specific responsibilities include guiding the design and implementation of projects in the Africa region, providing technical backstopping throughout the project cycle, coordinating REDD and related activities, and contributing to the planning and monitoring of global knowledge activities. The officer will also strengthen relationships with resource partners and participate in donor coordination forums, ensuring effective communication and collaboration with governments and stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in forestry, natural resources management, environmental sciences, or a related field. A minimum of five years of relevant experience in the fields of forests and climate change, particularly with REDD initiatives, is required. International experience, especially in developing countries and with international organizations, is highly desirable. Proficiency in English (level C) and intermediate knowledge of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is mandatory.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced university degree, specifically a Master’s degree or equivalent, in fields related to forestry, natural resources management, or environmental sciences. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of forest management and climate change issues.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in the field of forests and climate change, with a focus on REDD initiatives. Candidates should have international experience, preferably in developing countries, and should demonstrate a strong background in supporting the implementation of complex projects. Experience in building and coordinating project teams, as well as working with various stakeholders, is also essential.

Languages:
Candidates must have a working knowledge of English (proficiency - level C) and intermediate knowledge of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish). Additionally, proficiency in French and intermediate knowledge of Spanish are considered assets for this position.
