Job Overview: The Senior Investment Officer (SIO) position within the Financial Institutions Group (FIG) at IFC is a critical role that involves engaging with the financial sector to drive investment opportunities and enhance financial inclusion across Africa. The SIO will be responsible for originating, managing, and monitoring IFC’s financial sector investments, which are vital for the institutions' regional expansion. This role requires a deep understanding of local markets and industry dynamics, as well as the ability to build strong relationships with clients and stakeholders. The SIO will report to the FIG Regional Industry Manager and will play a key role in developing innovative financial structures and leading investment transactions. The position demands excellent communication skills in English, with proficiency in French being a significant advantage.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Senior Investment Officer include: developing a robust pipeline of high-quality investment opportunities through proactive origination and business development; building and maintaining strong relationships with existing and potential clients, investors, and key stakeholders in the financial sector; mobilizing other investors alongside IFC; engaging with mid and senior-level clients to understand their business directions and challenges; leading investment transactions and incorporating lessons learned from previous investments; supporting upstream initiatives to unlock constraints to financial sector growth; evaluating, structuring, negotiating, and closing new transactions; mentoring and coaching junior staff; coordinating with social, environmental, governance, and technical assistance colleagues; monitoring complex portfolio projects; reviewing and analyzing financial performance of clients; and ensuring quality of portfolio reporting information prepared by junior staff.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree in finance or a similar relevant field, with additional accreditation as a CFA or CPA considered a plus. A minimum of 10-14 years of relevant experience in the financial sector is required, including a solid operational understanding of commercial banks and other financial entities in Africa. Candidates should demonstrate a strong network of top-level contacts in the financial services and investment industries, along with documented experience in identifying, evaluating, structuring, and negotiating private debt and equity investments. Strong problem-solving and negotiation skills, the ability to work effectively under pressure, and the capacity to manage conflicting priorities are essential. Candidates should also have the ability to build and maintain relationships with business communities and governmental authorities, as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with French being a plus.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Master's degree in finance or a related field. Additional qualifications such as CFA or CPA accreditation are advantageous and demonstrate a higher level of expertise in financial management and investment analysis.
Experience: The position requires at least 10-14 years of relevant experience in the financial sector. This experience should encompass a comprehensive understanding of commercial banking operations and other financial entities within the African context. Candidates should have a proven track record in investment management, including experience in portfolio management and the ability to navigate complex financial transactions.
