Job Overview: The STRIDES DRC Project Director is responsible for leading and directing the implementation of the US Government-funded Global Healthsecurity" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security (GHS), Mpox, and Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers (VHF) activities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This role is crucial in enhancing global health priorities within the country, with the primary objective of strengthening laboratory and surveillance systems to effectively prevent, detect, and respond to emerging infectious diseases and public health threats. The Project Director will manage all aspects of the project, including personnel, budget, and technical responsibilities, while serving as the primary liaison with the US Government and key stakeholders. The position requires a strategic approach to developing and implementing annual work plans, monitoring and evaluation activities, and ensuring compliance with policies and regulations. The Project Director will also oversee subcontractors and collaborate with various sectors, including human, animal, and environmental health, to achieve the project's goals.
Duties and Responsibilities: The STRIDES DRC Project Director will be responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating the implementation of GHS, Mpox, and VHF activities to ensure that all goals and objectives are met within the specified timeframes and funding parameters. This includes establishing country-specific work plans, teams, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure compliance with organizational policies. The Project Director will directly manage technical, financial, and operational staff, fostering a safe and equitable work environment. Additionally, the role involves managing relationships with national, regional, and local government counterparts, as well as multi-sectoral partners, to identify technical assistance needed to fulfill national global health security objectives. The Project Director will serve as the primary point of contact for in-country stakeholders, lead the in-country team, and liaise with global leadership to define and implement technical work plans, budgets, and reports. Ensuring the timely delivery of high-quality deliverables and providing guidance and training to staff are also key responsibilities. The Project Director will support performance management and professional development for direct reports, ensuring alignment with organizational values and quality standards.
Required Qualifications: Candidates for the STRIDES DRC Project Director position should possess comprehensive knowledge of project management theories, concepts, and practices. Familiarity with international Global Health Security frameworks and initiatives, particularly those related to US Government programs, is highly preferred. Excellent project management skills are essential, including the ability to develop annual work plans and deliverables while overseeing monitoring and evaluation plans. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are necessary to effectively engage with clients and staff. The ideal candidate will have strong influencing, negotiation, and collaboration skills, with prior experience in developing partnerships and managing relationships with USAID, host country government, and other implementing partners. Educational Background: A Bachelor’s degree or its international equivalent in public health or a related health field is required for this position. A Master’s degree or its international equivalent is preferred, along with project management certification. Experience: The STRIDES DRC Project Director typically requires a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in project management principles and practices, including at least 5 years of experience managing staff. Candidates should be proficient with applicable USAID or other donor rules, regulations, and policies. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in managing and implementing human or animal health projects related to infectious diseases are essential. Experience working on Global Health Security projects or activities is preferred, as is experience working across multiple sectors (One Health). The ability to develop and mentor staff and build the capacity of local teams and partners is also important, along with experience in managing complex, multidisciplinary projects.
Languages: Proficiency in the English language (reading, writing, and speaking) is required for this position. Fluency in French is also required, as it is essential for effective communication within the local context and with various stakeholders. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not mandatory.
