Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a renowned scientific research organization established in 195
It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research in the field of particle physics. CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists and engineers from around the globe. The organization operates in multiple countries, with its primary focus on understanding the fundamental structure of the universe through high-energy particle collisions. CERN's mission is to advance knowledge and technology in the field of particle physics, and it is known for its cutting-edge research and development in various scientific disciplines.
Job Overview: The Mechanical Engineer position within the Cryogenics Group at CERN offers a unique opportunity to work in a challenging and dynamic environment. The role involves contributing to the design, procurement, installation, and commissioning of cryogenic systems and devices essential for CERN's accelerators, detectors, and test facilities. As part of the mechanical engineering team, you will engage in thermo-hydraulic and thermo-mechanical design and analysis of cryogenic equipment, ensuring that helium flows efficiently for the next generation of particle colliders. This position is integral to the development of Cryogenic Superconducting Radio Frequency Cavities and the construction of dedicated cryogenic test facilities. You will collaborate closely with external suppliers and internal partners, manage project quality control, and oversee the technical documentation and Quality Assurance plan. This role not only requires technical expertise but also emphasizes teamwork, problem-solving, and effective communication skills.
Duties and Responsibilities: As a Mechanical Engineer in the Cryogenics Group, your responsibilities will include: performing thermo-hydraulic and thermo-mechanical design and analysis of cryogenic equipment; designing cryogenic systems and overseeing their construction in collaboration with suppliers and partners; writing technical specifications for cryogenic components; contributing to project management and quality control; conducting market surveys and managing material procurement; supervising teams involved in the design, construction, assembly, installation, testing, and commissioning of cryogenic equipment; and managing the associated technical documentation and Quality Assurance plans. You will also be expected to ensure that all work adheres to safety standards and regulatory requirements, particularly in radiation areas and underground installations.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree or PhD in mechanical engineering or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience. A strong background in mechanical design of industrial equipment, particularly in the cryogenics or process field, is essential. Experience in preparing technical specifications, managing industrial projects, and coordinating installation and commissioning activities is highly desirable. Familiarity with complex industrial processes involving cryogenics, pressure equipment, or vacuum technologies will be considered an asset. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate proficiency in project management tools and methods, as well as a solid understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and manufacturing methods.
Educational Background: The ideal candidate will have a Master's degree or PhD in mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline. This educational background should provide a strong foundation in the principles of mechanical design, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics, as well as experience with numerical modeling and analysis techniques relevant to cryogenic systems.
Experience: Candidates should have substantial experience in mechanical design, particularly in the context of industrial equipment related to cryogenics or similar fields. This includes experience in preparing technical specifications, managing projects, and coordinating with suppliers and contractors. Familiarity with complex industrial processes and the ability to deal with challenges in cryogenics, pressure equipment, or vacuum technologies will be beneficial. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to work autonomously while also contributing effectively to team efforts.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English is mandatory, as it is the working language at CERN. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to learning French, which is beneficial for communication within the organization and with local stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This position is offered as a limited duration contract for a period of 5 years, with the possibility of applying for an indefinite position subject to certain conditions. The role requires a commitment of 40 hours per week and may involve work in radiation areas, underground installations, and during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed. Candidates must possess a valid driving license and may be required to undergo medical clearance due to occupational health risks associated with the position. The job grade for this position is 6-7, and the reference for this job is TE-CRG-ME-2025-148-LD.
