Job Overview:
The Technical Support Officer position at WFP involves providing technical support and assisting in the development and implementation of various activities and processes within the specific area of work. This role is crucial for ensuring alignment with wider program policies and guidelines. The officer will be responsible for specialized project management support to defined programs, ensuring that activities are performed within established targets and adhere to WFP’s policies and procedures. The position requires the preparation of reports and data analysis related to food assistance needs, resource utilization, and program performance, ensuring that deliverables meet corporate standards and quality control. The officer will also facilitate participatory reviews of Community Development Committees (CDCs) to enhance capacity strengthening and inclusivity, coordinate with local partners and agencies for accurate food security analyses, and support the capacity building of WFP staff and cooperating partners. This role is integral to the effective delivery of humanitarian assistance and requires strong collaboration with various stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical support and assist in the development and implementation of activities within the specific area of work, ensuring alignment with WFP policies and guidelines.
  • Offer specialized project management support to defined programs, ensuring activities are performed within established targets.
  • Prepare reports and conduct data analysis on food assistance needs, resource utilization, and program performance, highlighting trends and issues.
  • Ensure accurate and timely recording of data within the technical area of work, maintaining consistency of information presented to stakeholders.
  • Liaise with internal counterparts to support effective collaboration and monitoring of ongoing project activities.
  • Technically backstop CDCs in formulating Development and Land Use Plans.
  • Coordinate with local partners, agencies, NGOs, and government institutions for accurate food security analyses and efficient delivery of food assistance.
  • Support capacity building of WFP staff, cooperating partners, and national government within the specific technical area.
  • Act as a point of contact for resolving operational queries and problems within the technical area of responsibility. 1
  • Oversee and review the work of support staff, providing practical advice and guidance to meet objectives to agreed standards and deadlines.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should possess technical knowledge in agriculture, forestry, environmental science, and community development. A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in community development, environmental protection, or natural resource management is required, preferably in rural or forest-edge settings. Proven experience working with traditional institutions, local governance structures, and multi-stakeholder platforms is essential. Strong facilitation, interpersonal communication, and community mobilization skills are necessary, along with a valid driving license and the ability to ride a motorbike in challenging terrain.

Educational Background:
Candidates should have a degree in a relevant field such as agriculture, environmental science, community development, or a related discipline. Advanced degrees or specialized training in these areas will be considered an asset.

Experience:
Candidates must have at least 4 years of relevant experience in community development, environmental protection, or natural resource management. Experience in rural or forest-edge settings is preferred, along with a proven track record of working with local governance structures and community engagement.

Languages:
Fluency in English, both oral and written, is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in local languages is essential and will be considered a strong advantage.

This position is open to Sierra Leone Nationals only. It is a Service Contract General Service (Field) role. WFP offers a competitive compensation package that will be determined based on the contract type and the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.
