CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established in 195
  • It employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the world. CERN operates in multiple countries and is known for its groundbreaking research in particle physics, utilizing the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to explore the fundamental structure of the universe.

Job Overview:
As an RF Engineer within the Modulators, Klystrons & High-Gradient Structures (MKS) Section of the Radio Frequency (RF) Group, you will be responsible for the design, installation, operation, and optimization of high-power radio-frequency systems. This role is critical for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), Linac 4, and future accelerator test facilities. You will also contribute to the development of electron beam acceleration systems for the AWAKE project. Your work will involve collaboration with external institutions and companies as part of the EU-funded PACRI project, where you will test X-band modulators and klystrons to achieve high power and efficiency. The position requires a solid understanding of RF engineering principles and hands-on experience with RF test equipment, as well as the ability to analyze test results and propose improvements.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Your primary responsibilities will include participating in the operation of X-band testing facilities, leading the planning and installation of new hardware, performing acceptance tests on RF systems, and supporting validation processes for high-power RF components. You will also conduct global and final tests to demonstrate performance, analyze test results, troubleshoot issues, and prepare technical documentation such as test protocols and reports. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and effective communication will be essential in this role.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must be nationals of CERN Member or Associate Member States and possess a professional background in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field. A Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of experience is required. Additionally, candidates must not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a closely related field is required, with a preference for candidates who have a PhD. The educational background should provide a strong foundation in RF and microwave engineering principles, particularly in high-power applications.

Experience:
Candidates should have 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience if holding a Master's degree, or up to 3 years if holding a PhD. Experience in operation and maintenance of RF components and systems, as well as hands-on experience with RF test and measurement equipment, is essential.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning French, which is considered a valuable asset for this position.

Additional Notes:
The contract duration is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The position requires a commitment of 40 hours per week and involves work in radiation areas and operations on high-voltage electrical installations. Candidates must obtain medical clearance due to occupational health risks associated with the role. The job offers a monthly stipend between 6287 and 6911 Swiss Francs, comprehensive health coverage, and various allowances depending on individual circumstances. Additionally, employees receive 30 days of paid leave per year and opportunities for on-the-job training and language courses.
