Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. It employs physicists and engineers who utilize the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter. CERN is known for its groundbreaking research in particle physics and operates in multiple countries, primarily in Europe, with a diverse workforce that reflects its commitment to inclusivity and collaboration.

Job Overview:
The Mechanical Technician position at CERN is designed for individuals with substantial experience in heavy mechanics, logistics, and the operation and maintenance of complex assemblies. The successful candidate will join the CMS Experiment Systems Group (CMX) within the Experimental Physics Department (EP). This role involves working on the CMS detector, which is one of the four large experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The CMS detector is a massive structure weighing approximately 14,000 tonnes, composed of large movable segments that can weigh up to 2,000 tonnes. The technician will be part of a technical coordination-team" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">coordination team responsible for all technical aspects related to the operation, maintenance, and upgrade of the CMS detector, including configuration changes and the installation of new detectors. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and innovation in developing systems that meet challenging requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:
As a Mechanical Technician, the individual will be responsible for actively participating in the assembly and disassembly of the CMS detector, which includes the opening and closing of large components using various mechanical systems such as screw jacks, hydraulic jacks, strand-jack systems, and pneumatic locking systems. The technician will also maintain and improve heavy lifting and hydraulic tools, design and commission new tools, and supervise on-site activities involving collaboration technicians and external suppliers. Additionally, the technician will support the operation and maintenance of the mechanical workshop at the CMS site, acting as a deputy to the workshop supervisor. The role requires interpreting 2D and 3D designs, constructing tooling, and manufacturing mechanical pieces as needed.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in Hydraulics, Mechanics, Electro-Mechanics, or a related field. Additional training or certificates such as high-pressure training, welding certification, and scaffolding certification are considered advantageous. The role demands demonstrated experience in operating and maintaining heavy lifting hydraulic, mechanical, and pneumatic systems, as well as performing mechanical site work. Initial experience in running a mechanical workshop, including the use of tools and machines, maintenance of equipment, safety protocols, validation of procedures, and work scheduling, is also required. Furthermore, candidates should have experience supervising technical teams.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a higher technical diploma or equivalent in a relevant field such as Hydraulics, Mechanics, or Electro-Mechanics. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complex systems and tools used in the role, as well as for ensuring safety and efficiency in mechanical operations.

Experience:
The position requires a significant level of experience, particularly in operating and maintaining heavy lifting hydraulic, mechanical, and pneumatic systems. Candidates should have a proven track record of performing mechanical site work and initial experience in managing a mechanical workshop. Experience in supervising technical teams is also crucial, as the technician will be responsible for overseeing the work of collaboration technicians and external suppliers.

Languages:
Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learning the other language. This bilingual requirement is essential for effective communication within the diverse international environment at CERN.

Additional Notes:
The position is offered as a limited duration contract for five years, with the possibility of applying for an indefinite position subject to certain conditions. The working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the role involves working in radiation areas and underground installations. A valid driving license is required, and the position may involve shift work, stand-by duty, and work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed. Candidates must also be prepared for the occupational health risks associated with the position and must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed. The job grade for this position is classified as 3-4.
