Job Overview:
The Principal Banker role is a key position within the Sustainable Infrastructure Middle East & Africa team at the EBRD. This role is primarily focused on the energy and infrastructure sectors, particularly in the Bank's new Countries of Operation in sub-Saharan Africa. The Principal Banker is responsible for all aspects of project development and implementation, including project origination, structuring, execution, and monitoring. This position requires a high level of competency in managing complex transactions and leading project teams. The Principal Banker will also engage in business development, client management, and policy dialogue, ensuring that projects align with the Bank's operational objectives. The role demands a proactive approach to building relationships with stakeholders and a commitment to delivering high-quality results within specified time frames.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Principal Banker will undertake a variety of duties, including:
  • Structuring and Execution: Collaborate with senior operation leaders on complex transactions, manage project teams, oversee project due diligence, and ensure compliance with the Bank's standards.
  • Portfolio Monitoring, Value Creation, and Reporting: Monitor projects effectively, manage client relationships, and supervise junior bankers in portfolio monitoring tasks.
  • Policy Dialogue: Contribute to policy dialogue initiatives, assist in procuring grants and technical cooperation funds, and support national level initiatives.
  • Business Development: Engage in marketing efforts, develop market contacts, and screen project proposals to identify viable investments.
  • Staff Management: Recruit, train, and mentor junior bankers, ensuring quality project work and appropriate workload distribution. The Principal Banker is expected to champion the Bank's values and maintain high standards of integrity and ethical conduct.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree, with a Master’s degree preferred or equivalent experience in relevant fields. Professional qualifications such as ACA, CFA, ACCA, or CIMA are desirable. Strong quantitative and numerical skills are essential, along with the ability to interpret financial information and design financial models. Candidates should have excellent stakeholder management, coaching, mentoring, and leadership skills, as well as strong relationship management and negotiation abilities. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and analysis" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">financial analysis tools is required, along with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are mandatory, and knowledge of the local language is advantageous.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for the Principal Banker position includes a Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, business administration, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred, as it provides a deeper understanding of complex financial concepts and project management. Additional professional qualifications such as ACA, CFA, ACCA, or CIMA are highly regarded and can enhance a candidate's profile.

Experience:
Candidates should have significant relevant experience in the financial industry, ideally from an investment or commercial bank, private equity firm, asset management firm, or auditing/financial consulting firm that operates to international standards. Practical experience in leading complex transactions through the full project life cycle is essential, along with a strong background in project finance and/or climate finance, particularly in the energy or infrastructure sectors. Experience in the EBRD’s new Countries of Operation in sub-Saharan Africa is particularly valuable.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the primary language of communication within the Bank. A good command of the local language in the countries of operation is considered an advantage and can facilitate better engagement with local stakeholders and clients.
