Job Overview: The security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Field Security Associate plays a crucial role in supporting all security-related aspects of field operations within UNHCR. This position involves providing assistance to the supervisor in evaluating risks and assessing existing security measures for UNHCR staff, operations, premises, partners, and persons of concern. The incumbent is expected to conduct regular security assessments, gather and analyze information about the security situation, and ensure compliance with security protocols and procedures. The Field Security Associate will maintain regular contact with other UNHCR staff members, UN agencies, NGOs, and local authorities to facilitate operations and ensure the safety of personnel and assets. The role requires a proactive approach to identifying and managing risks while supporting the implementation of security-related projects and providing training and briefings to staff on security measures and protocols.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Field Security Associate include:
Assisting the supervisor in evaluating the level of risk and assessing existing security measures for UNHCR staff, operations, premises, partners, and persons of concern.
Conducting regular security assessment missions to the field in coordination with UNDSS and other agencies, gathering and analyzing information about the security situation during field missions.
Being aware of security protocols and procedures in accordance with UNSMS policies and UNHCR policies, and conducting checks for compliance while advising management on any deficiencies.
Monitoring the physical security of UNHCR premises and reporting on deficiencies.
Monitoring and supervising the guard force in accordance with relevant UNSMS policies and guidance.
Assisting UNHCR Protection Colleagues in ensuring the physical protection and security of refugees and other persons of concern.
Providing support during the implementation of security-related projects.
Assisting in the monitoring, updating, and reporting of security-related events.
Processing administrative security issues. 1
Maintaining relations and cooperation with UN security management system actors, local law enforcement agencies, civil authorities, and other relevant agencies. 1
Providing security briefings and training to UNHCR staff and partner staff on relevant security risk management processes and measures. 1
Responding to staff queries on security issues and providing immediate assistance as required. 1
Providing security-related advice to the manager and other staff. 1
Maintaining liaison and building relationships with Host Government Security Forces and security counterparts. 1
Supporting the identification and management of risks and seeking to seize opportunities impacting objectives in the area of responsibility. 1
Raising risks, issues, and concerns to a supervisor or relevant functional colleagues. 1
Performing other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications: The required qualifications for the Field Security Associate position include:
For G6 level, a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience with a High School Diploma, or 2 years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent or higher.
Essential functional skills include IT-Computer Literacy, FS-Field Security Operations, and FS-Security Analysis.
Cross-cultural communication skills are also essential.
Candidates should have a high level of knowledge in the security field, particularly in security planning and support to refugees and/or UNHCR operations.
Familiarity with UNHCR programs and experience with UNHCR operations is highly desirable.
Educational Background: The educational background required for the Field Security Associate position includes a High School Diploma as a minimum requirement. Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent or higher are preferred, especially if they have relevant work experience in the field of security. No specific field of education is mandated, but a background in security and safety is beneficial.
Experience: Candidates applying for the Field Security Associate position should have a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience for those with a High School Diploma, or 2 years of relevant work experience for those with a Bachelor’s degree or higher. Experience in the field of security, particularly in security planning and support to refugees and/or UNHCR operations, is highly desirable. Familiarity with the UNHCR programs and operations is also an advantage.
Languages: For this position, knowledge of English is mandatory, and candidates should also be familiar with the UN working language of the duty station if it is not English. For General Service jobs, knowledge of English and/or the UN working language of the duty station is required. Local language proficiency is also beneficial, especially for National Professional jobs.

The position is located in Damascus, Syria, which is classified as a hardship location (E level). The position is non-family, meaning that the incumbent will not be accompanied by family members. The role may involve danger pay due to the security situation in the area.
