Job Overview: The internship-programme" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Internship Programme at IOM aims to attract talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in migration-related fields. Interns are expected to be between 20 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience. The programme is designed to provide interns with practical experience in areas relevant to IOM's programmes and activities, allowing them to contribute to the organization's goals while gaining valuable insights into the field of migration. Interns will work under the supervision of experienced professionals, contributing to data analysis, report writing, and other tasks that support the IOM's mission. This position is based in Dakar, Senegal, within the Regional Data Hub, which focuses on providing data and analysis expertise to inform policies and programmes related to migration and displacement.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including but not limited to: assisting in the production, analysis, writing, editing, and publication of DTM reports, factsheets, and dashboards; producing summary statistics and narratives for regional reports; centralizing, cleaning, and processing DTM data; supporting the development and drafting of reports; providing ad-hoc support to country offices; conducting literature reviews; coordinating with global DTM support teams; and performing any other tasks as assigned. Interns will also contribute to data quality control and ensure alignment with DTM standards and IOM Data Protection Principles. The role requires effective collaboration with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and the ability to work under tight deadlines.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess excellent research, writing, communication, and statistical/analytical skills. They should demonstrate accountability, client orientation, continuous learning, creativity, and professionalism. A strong interest in migration, development economics, political economy, conflict studies, public health, or humanitarian issues is essential. Interns should also exhibit flexibility, efficiency, and the ability to work harmoniously in a team environment. Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and experience with relevant software such as Python, ArcGIS/QGIS, and SQL Server are highly desirable. Familiarity with data visualization and publication software, as well as experience organizing webinars and training sessions, will be advantageous.
Educational Background: A Master’s degree from an accredited academic institution in a field related to Economics, Development Economics, Data Science, Political Science, Social Science, Development Studies, Public Health, Epidemiology, or other relevant disciplines with a significant quantitative component is required. Alternatively, candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in the aforementioned fields and demonstrable relevant working experience will also be considered.
Experience: Interns should have less than two years of relevant working experience. The ideal candidate will have experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods, as well as a strong understanding of migration-related issues. Previous experience in data analysis, report writing, and working with diverse teams will be beneficial. Interns should be able to demonstrate their ability to produce clear and concise reports and have a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
Languages: Excellent communication skills in English and French (both written and oral) are mandatory. Fluency in Arabic or Spanish is advantageous and will be evaluated during the selection process. Candidates should be prepared for assessments that may include written and/or oral evaluations of their language proficiency.
Additional Notes: The internship is subject to funding confirmation and medical fitness certification. Interns may receive a small monthly stipend to help offset costs, but those receiving financial remuneration or credits from their university or sponsoring body will not be eligible for this stipend. IOM provides coverage against occupational accidents and illnesses for interns, but does not offer evacuation or medical insurance for non-occupational incidents. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance and must provide proof of coverage before starting work. IOM adheres to a zero-tolerance policy regarding misconduct and does not charge any fees during the recruitment process.
