Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centers for scientific research. It employs over 2,500 staff members and has a diverse workforce from more than 100 nationalities. CERN operates in multiple countries, primarily in Europe, and is known for its groundbreaking research in particle physics, utilizing the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to explore the fundamental structure of the universe. The organization is committed to diversity and inclusion, recognizing that a diverse workforce is essential for its success.

Job Overview:
The Mechanical Engineer position within the Mechanical and Materials Engineering (EN-MME) group at CERN involves significant contributions to the design, simulation, and optimization of CO2 cooling transfer lines as part of the CMS detector upgrade. The role requires performing thermo-mechanical analyses using finite element analysis tools like ANSYS, alongside structural and thermal calculations that adhere to relevant standards. The successful candidate will engage in iterative design development to achieve performance objectives while addressing integration constraints. Collaboration with engineers, designers, and technicians across various domains is essential, as is the preparation of comprehensive technical documentation throughout the project lifecycle. This position is critical for ensuring the successful implementation of engineering solutions that meet the project's requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct design, simulation, and optimization of CO2 cooling transfer lines for the CMS detector upgrade.
  • Perform thermo-mechanical analyses using finite element analysis software such as ANSYS.
  • Execute structural and thermal calculations in compliance with relevant standards.
  • Engage in iterative design development to meet performance objectives and integration constraints.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, and technicians across multiple domains.
  • Contribute to fabrication-related decisions and support quality assurance activities.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Analyze and interpret simulation data to guide design decisions.
  • Ensure compliance with EN 13480 and other international design and safety standards for pressure vessels and mechanical components. 1
  • Maintain excellent communication and documentation practices throughout the project.

Required Qualifications:
  • Proven experience with finite element analysis software for thermal and structural simulations (e.g., ANSYS).
  • Ability to analyze and interpret simulation data effectively.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software, preferably CATIA.
  • Familiarity with EN 13480 and other international design and safety standards for pressure vessels and mechanical components is advantageous.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as in teams.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.
  • Commitment to learning the basics of French if English is the primary language spoken.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Applicants without a university degree are not eligible, and those with a PhD are also not eligible for this position. The educational qualification must be obtained before the application deadline.

Experience:
Candidates should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. This experience should be relevant to the duties and responsibilities outlined for the position.

Languages:
Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to learning the basics of the other language, enhancing communication within the diverse work environment at CERN.
