ESCAP supports its member states through policy-oriented research, normative support, technical assistance, and capacity building to address the development priorities and evolving needs of the region. The Centre for Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization (CSAM), based in Beijing, is a key institute under ESCAP, focusing on enhancing technical cooperation among member states and promoting sustainable agricultural practices and technologies to achieve internationally agreed development goals, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Job Overview: The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position at ESCAP offers a unique opportunity for individuals to gain practical experience in a dynamic international organization. Interns will be engaged in various tasks that support the mission of ESCAP, particularly in the areas of sustainable agricultural mechanization. The internship is designed to provide hands-on experience in a professional setting, where interns will work closely with experienced staff members. The role is full-time and unpaid, requiring a commitment of five days a week, totaling 37.5 hours. Interns will have the chance to contribute to meaningful projects while developing their skills and understanding of the UN's operations and objectives in the Asia and Pacific region. Responsibilities will vary based on the intern's background and the duration of the internship, allowing for a tailored experience that aligns with the intern's academic and professional goals.
Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be responsible for a variety of tasks that may include, but are not limited to: providing administrative support to the division; assisting in the preparation of official documents; contributing to social media outreach efforts; aiding in the building of partnerships with stakeholders; and providing logistical support for meetings and conferences. These duties are designed to enhance the intern's understanding of the workings of the UN and to develop their professional skills in a supportive environment. Interns will work under the supervision of a staff member, who will guide them in their tasks and provide mentorship throughout the internship period.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria to be eligible for the internship: (a) be currently enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be currently enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). This ensures that interns possess a foundational level of education and knowledge relevant to the tasks they will undertake during their internship.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this internship includes either a graduate degree or a bachelor's degree. Candidates should be enrolled in a relevant field of study that aligns with the mission of ESCAP and the specific duties of the internship. This could include areas such as international relations, sustainable development, agricultural sciences, or public policy, among others. The internship is designed to complement the academic pursuits of the interns, providing practical experience that enhances their educational journey.
Experience: While prior work experience is not mandatory for this internship, any relevant experience in administrative roles, research, or project support will be considered an asset. Interns are expected to demonstrate a willingness to learn and adapt to the fast-paced environment of the United Nations. This internship is particularly suited for students or recent graduates looking to gain exposure to international development and the operations of a major global organization.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for the internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is another working language within the UN system. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an advantage, particularly if they are relevant to the region or the specific projects being undertaken by ESCAP.
Additional Notes: The internship is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of China may need to secure the appropriate visa and work authorization prior to starting the internship. It is important for candidates to discuss their visa requirements with the organization before accepting an internship offer. The internship duration is expected to be between two to three months, with the possibility of extension up to six months, depending on the intern's performance and the needs of the organization. The United Nations does not charge any fees at any stage of the recruitment process, ensuring a fair and transparent selection process.
