Job Overview:
The position of Consultor/a de Nutrición involves providing specialized technical assistance to deliver nutritional care through comprehensive brigades. The consultant will conduct nutritional assessments, supplementation, and counseling, and will identify and treat acute malnutrition in children under five and women in prioritized municipalities of Chiquimula. The role requires the consultant to live in the municipalities of Chiquimula, as 80% of the work will be community-based in the most remote and vulnerable areas. The consultant will also be responsible for training community leaders to become 'agents of change' in their communities, focusing on nutrition and health education.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will coordinate with two colleagues and under the supervision of the responsible nutritionist to plan and schedule monthly activities. Responsibilities include requesting supplies from the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS), coordinating with local authorities, conducting nutritional assessments for children under five, adolescent girls, pregnant women, and lactating mothers in prioritized communities. The consultant will provide counseling on proper feeding practices, offer micronutrient supplementation as needed, and maintain records of activities performed. They will also train community leaders on the prevention and timely detection of acute malnutrition, breastfeeding, child feeding, hygiene, and recognizing signs of danger. Data entry into the appropriate platform for report generation and monthly reporting of actions, coverage, and findings are also required.
Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in nursing or a related field, social work, nursing assistant, or rural health technician. A 20-hour breastfeeding course is desirable, but if not completed, it must be undertaken before starting activities. Experience in fieldwork is essential, with a preference for candidates who have experience in nutritional assessment for children under five, community-level food and nutrition education, and knowledge of security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">food security and nutrition topics. Familiarity with participatory methodologies for food and nutrition education and knowledge of the Health Services Network and MSPAS care standards are also desirable.
Educational Background:
A Bachelor's degree in nursing, social work, nursing assistance, or a related health field is required. Additional training in breastfeeding and nutrition is preferred, with a specific emphasis on practical experience in community health settings.
Experience:
Candidates should have significant field experience, particularly in community health and nutrition. Experience in conducting nutritional assessments and providing education on food and nutrition at the community level is highly desirable. Familiarity with food security and nutrition issues will be an advantage.
Languages:
Fluency in Spanish is mandatory. Knowledge of indigenous languages spoken in the Chiquimula region would be an asset, enhancing communication with local communities.
Additional Notes:
The position is a consultancy role, and the final fee will follow the principle of 'best value for money,' meaning achieving desired outcomes at the lowest possible fees. Consultants are required to provide all-inclusive fees, including travel and per diem expenses where applicable. Late delivery of products will incur penalties, and payment conditions specify that UNICEF will pay within 30 days of receiving the consultant's invoice, which is issued only after UNICEF's acceptance of the work specified in the contract.
