Established in 1975 and headquartered in Paris, ESA has more than 2000 staff worldwide. The European Space Agency (ESA) is Europe’s gateway to space. Its mission is to shape the development of Europe’s space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world. ESA's space flight programme includes human spaceflight (mainly through participation in the International Space Station program); the launch and operation of unmanned exploration missions to other planets and the Moon; Earth observation, science and telecommunication; designing launch vehicles; and maintaining a major spaceport, the Guiana Space Centre at Kourou, French Guiana.
Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The job posting organization is the European Space Agency (ESA), which is dedicated to the exploration of space and the development of space technologies. Established in 1975, ESA has grown to encompass 22 member states and employs over 2,200 staff members. The agency operates across various countries in Europe and collaborates with international partners to advance space science and technology. ESA's mission includes the development of satellite systems, Earth observation, human spaceflight, and the exploration of other planets, all aimed at enhancing knowledge and fostering innovation in the field of space.

Job Overview:
The Internal Research Fellow position is situated within the ESA Directorate of Space Transportation, specifically in the STS ESRIN Integrated Project Team. The role focuses on advancing the understanding of cryogenic LOx-methane propulsion systems through rigorous research and development. The fellow will engage in the creation of a model-based digital twin for these propulsion systems, utilizing innovative techniques such as chemical reactor networks and machine learning. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about space research and eager to contribute to the development of green launch vehicles that aim to reduce costs and enhance operational capabilities. The fellow will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and researchers, fostering collaboration and innovation in the field of space transportation.

Duties and Responsibilities:
As an Internal Research Fellow, the individual will be responsible for conducting independent research in model-based digital system engineering and digital twin development. Key duties include proposing and executing research projects, analyzing vehicle architectures based on cryogenic propulsion, developing mathematical models for cryogenic engines, and validating uncertainty quantification methods for machine learning applications. The fellow will also publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, lead interdisciplinary projects, and participate in assessments of novel space system concepts. Additionally, the fellow will collaborate with academic institutions and contribute to the strategic development of ESA's space transportation initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a recently completed or nearly completed PhD in a relevant technical or scientific discipline, preferably in engineering or physics with a focus on thermal fluid-structure interaction. A strong research/publication record and the ability to conduct research autonomously are essential. Proficiency in a programming language and experience in scientific physical-mathematical modeling are also required. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a keen interest in interdisciplinary research and possess strong networking skills to foster collaborations with universities and research institutes.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a PhD in engineering or physics, with a preference for candidates whose thesis topics align with the fields of cryogenic propulsion systems or related areas. Candidates who have completed their PhD within the last five years will be given preference, highlighting the agency's commitment to attracting recent graduates and fostering new talent in the field of space research.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have experience in scientific physical-mathematical modeling and a strong desire to pursue a career in academia or research. Experience in space vehicle mission design or system engineering is considered a significant asset, as it aligns with the responsibilities of the role and the objectives of the ESA's space transportation programs. Candidates should also demonstrate the ability to work independently while being part of a diverse and interdisciplinary research team.

Languages:
The working languages of the European Space Agency are English and French. A good command of one of these languages is mandatory, while knowledge of another language from an ESA member state is considered an asset. This requirement reflects the agency's multicultural environment and the need for effective communication among team members from various backgrounds.

Additional Notes:
The position is a full-time internal research fellowship with a contract duration that aligns with the research project timeline. Candidates must be eligible to access information and technology subject to European or US export control regulations and must be able to obtain security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security-clearance" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security clearance from their national security administrations.
