Job Overview:
The internship-position" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">internship position is offered within the International Trade and Industry Unit at ECLAC Mexico and is designed to last for a duration of six months. The internship is hybrid, allowing for both remote and in-person work, with a commitment of five days per week, totaling 35 hours. The working hours are from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The intern will be expected to support the team in analyzing economic, social, and environmental data related to trade relations, trade policies, and productive policies. The intern will also engage in research on global value chains and Central America's access to higher value-added activities. The role requires the intern to find, analyze, and visualize qualitative and quantitative data, draft and edit materials, present research findings, and assist in logistical support for meetings and events. The internship is not paid, and candidates may be selected throughout the posting period based on the needs of the office.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
  • Finding, analyzing, and visualizing qualitative and quantitative data and information related to trade and productive policies.
  • Contributing to the drafting, editing, and analysis of materials for the team, including literature reviews and summaries of relevant publications.
  • Presenting research findings and proposing new topics for discussion with colleagues.
  • Assisting in additional tasks such as researching guest speakers for events, providing logistical support for meetings, and preparing minutes.
  • Compiling and analyzing information on trade policy measures implemented globally and the resulting reactions and countermeasures.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). While professional work experience is not required for the UN Internship Programme, a field of study closely related to the internship is necessary. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to find, analyze, and visualize data, draft inputs, and prepare presentations. Knowledge of trade policies, productive policies, and global value chains is desirable, along with proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, and MS Teams.

Educational Background:
Candidates should be majoring in areas such as economics, international trade, or international relations. They must be in the final year of their first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), or enrolled in or have completed a Master’s or Ph.D. program. Proof of enrollment or completion of the relevant degree must be provided with the application.

Experience:
While no professional work experience is required, candidates should have relevant academic experience in their field of study. The internship is designed for students or recent graduates who are looking to gain practical experience in international trade and economic policy analysis.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written Spanish is required for the internship, as it is a working language of ECLAC. Knowledge of English is also required, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Knowledge of French is considered an asset but is not mandatory.

The internship is not financially remunerated, and interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of Mexico may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization.
