Job Overview:
The internship is situated within the Water Unit of the Transboundary Cooperation Section of the Environment Division at UNECE, based in Geneva, Switzerland. The intern will work under the supervision of the Environmental Affairs Officer and will contribute to the secretariat of the Convention on the Use and Protection of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (Water Convention) and its Protocol on Water and Health. The role is designed to support the implementation of various projects and activities related to water management and environmental sustainability, aligning with the broader goals of the United Nations. The intern will engage in tasks that enhance their understanding of international water law, transboundary cooperation, and sustainable development practices, while also gaining practical experience in organizing meetings, preparing communication materials, and assisting with day-to-day operations of the secretariat.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern's responsibilities will include:
  • Supporting the preparation and organization of meetings related to the Water Convention and its Protocol, including the Joint meeting of the Working Group on Integrated Water Resources Management and the Working Group on Monitoring and Assessment, as well as the 7th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Protocol on Water and Health.
  • Assisting in the implementation of country projects and activities under the Water Convention and the Protocol, which may involve supporting the globalization of the Water Convention and contributing to the work on SDG indicator 6.5.
  • Helping with the activities of the Transboundary Water Cooperation Coalition and other related initiatives.
  • Preparing communication materials such as videos, visuals, articles, and publications to promote the Water Convention and its Protocol.
  • Providing general assistance to the secretariat, which may include drafting documents, updating the website, conducting desk research, and corresponding with country experts and partners.
  • Engaging in project reporting and other administrative tasks as required.

Required Qualifications:
To qualify for the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following criteria: (a) be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent). Additionally, candidates must be computer literate in standard software applications. A keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter are essential. Candidates should also demonstrate the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing tolerance and understanding of differing opinions.

Educational Background:
Candidates should have a background in fields related to environment, water management, development, international law, international relations, or equivalent disciplines. This educational foundation is crucial for understanding the complexities of transboundary water management and the legal frameworks that govern it.

Experience:
No professional work experience is required for participation in the Internship Programme. However, candidates should demonstrate relevant academic knowledge and a strong interest in the work of the United Nations, particularly in areas related to environmental sustainability and international cooperation.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. A working knowledge of French, Russian, Spanish, or Arabic is considered an asset, as it may enhance communication and collaboration within the diverse environment of the UN.
