Job Posting Organization: The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is an intergovernmental organization that provides services and advice concerning migration to governments and migrants alike. Established in 1951, IOM has grown to include 173 member states and operates in over 100 countries worldwide. The organization's mission is to promote humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all, ensuring that migration is safe, orderly, and dignified. IOM focuses on various aspects of migration, including climate change, environmental degradation, and their impacts on human mobility. The organization aims to support countries in developing policies that address these challenges, particularly in vulnerable regions like Lesotho, where climate change significantly affects livelihoods and migration patterns.
Job Overview: The consultancy position involves developing key messages and designing Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials focused on climate-resilient environmental practices. The consultant will work within the context of Lesotho, a country facing significant challenges due to climate change, including increased droughts and floods that have led to migration and changes in agricultural practices. The primary goal is to create materials that will educate and inform cooperative members and government stakeholders about sustainable practices that can mitigate the impacts of climate change. The consultant will engage in a comprehensive methodology that includes reviewing existing strategies, consulting with stakeholders, and developing content that is accessible and actionable for the target audience. The materials produced will be used to raise awareness and promote understanding of environmental resilience in communities affected by climate change.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will be responsible for several key tasks:
Conduct a thorough review of IOM’s Communication for Development (C4D) approach and relevant documents, including the IOM institutional MECC Strategy and the Government of Lesotho's climate change policies.
Engage in consultations with the National Climate Change Committee (NCCC) and other stakeholders to gather insights and feedback.
Develop clear, concise, and accurate content on waste management, recycling, and climate resilience practices in both English and Sesotho.
Design visually appealing IEC materials suitable for various platforms, including brochures, pamphlets, and mobile applications.
Test the materials with a sample audience and refine them based on feedback received.
Produce final versions of the materials ready for distribution.
Submit an inception report detailing the methodologies and processes to be undertaken during the consultancy.
Provide a final comprehensive report documenting the entire process, challenges faced, and recommendations for future initiatives.
Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate for this consultancy should possess an advanced university degree in environmental science, communication, education, or a related field. They must demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and have excellent written and spoken proficiency in both Sesotho and English. Strong report writing skills in English are highly desirable. The consultant should have proven experience in developing IEC materials specifically focused on environmental and climate change topics, showcasing a strong understanding of climate change resilience and sustainable practices. Additionally, excellent communication and design skills are essential for creating effective materials that resonate with the target audience.
Educational Background: Candidates must hold an advanced university degree in fields such as environmental science, communication, education, or other related disciplines. This educational background is crucial as it provides the necessary knowledge and skills to understand the complexities of climate change and its impact on communities, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders.
Experience: The consultant should have substantial experience in developing IEC materials related to environmental and climate change topics. This includes a proven track record of working on similar projects that involve stakeholder engagement, content development, and material design. Experience in the context of climate resilience and sustainable practices is particularly important, as the consultant will need to understand the local challenges faced by communities in Lesotho.
Languages: Proficiency in both Sesotho and English is mandatory for this position, as the materials developed will need to be accessible to a diverse audience. The ability to communicate effectively in both languages is essential for engaging with local communities and stakeholders. While proficiency in other languages may be beneficial, it is not a requirement for this consultancy.
Additional Notes: The consultancy is expected to last for a duration of 15 days, with no travel required. The consultant will work remotely and will be supervised by the Head of Office and the project manager, with support from regional office thematic specialists. The deliverables will include drafts and finalized IEC materials, as well as a comprehensive report documenting the consultancy process. It is important to note that any offer made to the candidate is subject to funding confirmation, and the appointment will require certification of medical fitness and verification of residency and visa requirements, where applicable. IOM has a zero-tolerance policy regarding misconduct and does not charge any fees during the recruitment process.
