Job Overview:
The Senior Driver position is crucial for the effective management of UNFPA's program activities in Papua New Guinea. The role involves providing reliable and safe driving services to UNFPA staff, high-ranking officials, and visitors. The driver will report directly to the Representative and is expected to uphold the highest standards of discretion, integrity, and responsibility. The position also requires a client-oriented approach, demonstrating courtesy and confidentiality while working with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. The driver will be responsible for transporting authorized personnel, delivering and collecting mail and documents, and providing overall administrative support to the office's operations. This role is essential for ensuring that UNFPA's mission is carried out effectively and efficiently, contributing to the organization's goals of improving reproductive health and rights.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Senior Driver will be responsible for a variety of tasks including:
  • Providing reliable and safe driving services for the UNFPA Representative and other high-ranking officials, ensuring timely transport for meetings and events.
  • Meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport, assisting with visa and customs formalities as required.
  • Maintaining a thorough understanding of traffic regulations, road conditions, and safety protocols to ensure safe travel.
  • Keeping accurate vehicle logs and contributing to the preparation of vehicle maintenance plans and reports to ensure cost-effective vehicle use.
  • Performing routine maintenance on the assigned vehicle, including minor repairs, oil changes, and ensuring cleanliness and good running condition.
  • Ensuring all necessary documents and supplies are available in the vehicle, including insurance, registration, and first aid kits.
  • Assisting office staff with administrative tasks such as filing, photocopying, and distribution of materials.
  • Providing logistical support for the clearance of UNFPA program supplies.

  • Performing any other tasks assigned by the supervisor or senior management.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a clean and valid national driver's license and have at least three years of work experience as a driver with a proven safe driving record. Knowledge of driving rules and regulations, chauffeur protocol, and local road conditions is essential. Candidates should also have skills in minor vehicle repairs and a general understanding of office operations, including mail delivery. The ability to work collaboratively in a team while respecting cultural and religious diversity is crucial. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are required, along with basic proficiency in MS Word and MS Excel.

Educational Background:
The minimum educational requirement for this position is the completion of Secondary Level Education. This foundational education is essential for understanding the responsibilities and tasks associated with the role of a driver and clerk within the UNFPA.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of three years of relevant work experience as a driver, demonstrating a safe driving record and familiarity with the local area. Experience in an office environment, particularly in roles involving mail delivery and administrative support, is desirable. The ability to work effectively in a team and adapt to diverse cultural contexts is also important.

Languages:
Fluency in the local language of Papua New Guinea is mandatory, along with a working knowledge of the UN language relevant to the duty station. This linguistic capability is essential for effective communication with staff and stakeholders.
