Job Overview: The position of Expert on Critical Energy Transition Minerals involves developing a comprehensive case study for the application of the United Nations Resource Management System (UNRMS) in Jordan. The expert will play a crucial role in supporting ESCWA's efforts to promote sustainable resource management practices in the region, particularly in the context of the growing demand for critical raw materials like lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements. The expert will be expected to conduct thorough research, analyze data, and engage with various stakeholders, including national governments and local communities, to ensure inclusivity and validate findings. The role is pivotal in aligning resource management practices with UNRMS principles and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), thereby contributing to the broader agenda of sustainable development and environmental responsibility.
Duties and Responsibilities: The expert will be responsible for several key duties, including:
Developing a UNRMS-based case study focused on the sustainable production of critical raw materials in Jordan, ensuring that the study aligns with UNRMS principles and the SDGs.
Conducting extensive research and data analysis to identify regional and global trade opportunities, financing mechanisms, and preparing detailed reports.
Engaging with national governments, industry stakeholders, and local communities to gather relevant information, ensuring inclusivity in the research process and validating findings.
Assessing Jordan's policy, regulatory, and investment climate concerning critical raw materials.
Identifying and integrating best practices for sustainable resource management, including circular economy principles and innovations in CRM production.
Providing actionable policy recommendations to address challenges and optimize the application of UNRMS in the region.
Contributing to workshops, training sessions, and knowledge-sharing activities to disseminate findings and promote sustainable practices that support capacity-building efforts.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in Sustainable Resource Management, Geology, Earth Sciences, Mining, Energy, Engineering and Trades, Public Policy, Economics, Social Sciences (with relevance to resource governance or environmental sustainability), or a related field. All applicants are required to submit a copy of their educational degree, as incomplete applications will not be considered. Additionally, candidates must demonstrate excellent analytical, research, writing, and communication skills, as well as a proven record of published work covering topics related to Sustainable Resource Management, Resource Management Systems, critical raw material production, environmental sustainability, and energy transition in the Arab region.
Educational Background: A Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Sustainable Resource Management, Geology, Earth Sciences, Mining, Energy, Engineering and Trades, Public Policy, Economics, or Social Sciences is required. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of resource governance and environmental sustainability, which are critical to the role.
Experience: Candidates must have at least 5 years of work experience in fields related to Sustainable Resource Management, Geology, Earth Sciences, Mining, Energy, Engineering and Trades, Public Policy, Economics, or Social Sciences, particularly with relevance to resource governance or environmental sustainability. This level of experience is necessary to ensure that the expert can effectively contribute to the project and provide valuable insights and recommendations.
Languages: Fluency in English is required for this position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Additionally, knowledge of French is beneficial, and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. Fluency in English means a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas: speaking, reading, writing, and understanding. Knowledge of Arabic or French would be considered an asset but is not mandatory.
