The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (RCO) play a crucial role in this system, providing leadership and coordination for development efforts at the country level. The UN RCO in Maldives is focused on supporting the country's development priorities and the attainment of the SDGs, under the leadership of the UN Resident Coordinator.

Job Overview:
The Development Coordination Officer / Economist position is integral to the UN's efforts in Maldives to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and support economic transformation. The role involves providing substantive advice to the UN Resident Coordinator and the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) on economic policies, SDG financing, and the implementation of the economic transformation agenda. The officer will be responsible for planning and facilitating evidence-based analysis of the SDGs, advocating for strong partnerships within the UN system and with national counterparts, and coordinating the development of integrated SDG programming cycles. This position requires a deep understanding of sustainable development trends and the ability to generate knowledge and manage information related to economic transformation and SDG financing.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct evidence-based analysis of the status of the SDGs, providing advice on economic transformation and SDG financing.
  • Advocate for partnerships within the UN system and with national counterparts to support economic policy reframing.
  • Coordinate the development of integrated SDG programming cycles, including roadmaps and annual reports.
  • Plan and direct knowledge management around economic transformation and SDG financing, promoting collaboration and sharing best practices.
  • Monitor regional and global economic trends and their implications for SDGs at the country level.
  • Conduct research and analysis to support policy dialogue and advocate for economic transformation.
  • Prepare UN flagship reports on economic transformation and SDG financing.
  • Engage with the private sector to identify SDG financing opportunities.
  • Support UNCT initiatives to advance SDG financing and provide economic analysis for cross-pillar approaches.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in macroeconomic policy, economic research, and analysis in the context of development cooperation. Knowledge of economics is essential, with familiarity in development economics and relevant experience at the national or international level being desirable. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to apply development economics theory to specific country contexts and conduct high-quality economic research. Understanding of SDGs and the UN Normative agenda is also desirable, along with experience in coordinating multi-stakeholder processes and strong analytical and writing skills.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics or public finance is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

Experience:
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in macroeconomic policy, economic research, and analysis is required. Candidates should have a strong understanding of development economics and experience in development cooperation, with proven ability to coordinate multi-stakeholder processes and engage in participatory assessments.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage. Fluency is defined as a rating of 'fluent' in all four areas (reading, writing, speaking, understanding).
