It plays a crucial role in supporting the global implementation of development policy goals. GIZ collaborates with partner organizations in 120 countries, engaging in a variety of projects aimed at improving lives and fostering sustainable development. The organization is committed to creating meaningful tasks for its employees, ensuring that they can contribute to making a difference in the world while also developing their own skills and careers.
Job Overview: The position is within the Climate Change Competence Center, which is part of the Department of Climate, Rural Development, and Infrastructure. This center addresses current developments and challenges in the climate sector and is involved in the GIZ's COP30 Task Force, which coordinates activities on the international climate agenda. The intern will primarily support the COP30 Task Force before, during, and after the climate conference, as well as contribute to the internal profile sharpening of the center. This role is ideal for someone looking to gain hands-on experience in climate policy and international cooperation, particularly in the context of significant global events like COP30.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will be responsible for a variety of tasks under the guidance of their supervisors, including: assisting the Task Force in the preparation, execution, and follow-up of COP30 of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which includes organizing and conducting official GIZ side events and other related events (note that participation in COP is not possible); supporting the follow-up of interim climate negotiations (SB62); assisting in the coordination of GIZ observers, particularly the coordinators, both in content and logistics during the conference; helping with the organization and reporting of events; creating social media content for GIZ channels regarding GIZ's engagement at COP30; preparing information for the GIZ intranet and managing internal knowledge; and assisting in the development of communication formats with internal and external partners.
Required Qualifications: Candidates should have a completed Bachelor's degree in natural sciences, social sciences, or development policy, or be currently enrolled in or have completed a Master's program within the last six months, preferably in climate change, politics, and development or a related field. They should possess specialized knowledge in climate change topics (adaptation, mitigation, financing) and a good understanding of current discussions within UN climate negotiations and relevant political agendas. Familiarity with concepts and strategies for sustainable development, such as the 2030 Agenda, is also required. Additionally, candidates should have initial experience in development cooperation or climate policy, ideally through internships or academic projects, and some experience in public relations, communication, and event management, with social media experience being advantageous.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a completed Bachelor's degree or a Master's degree in progress or completed within the last six months, with a focus on climate change, political science, development studies, or similar fields. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of climate policy and development cooperation.
Experience: The position requires initial experience in the fields of development cooperation or climate policy, which can be gained through internships or academic projects. Candidates should ideally have some exposure to working in developing or emerging countries, as well as experience in public relations, communication, and event management.
Languages: Fluency in both German and English is mandatory, with a minimum proficiency level of C1 in both languages. This is crucial for effective communication and collaboration within the international context of the climate conference. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not explicitly required.
Additional Notes: The internship is only possible if the candidate is currently enrolled in a program that requires an internship or if their degree was completed no more than six months prior to the start of the internship. The internship is full-time and will take place from July 1, 2025, to December 31, 202
