Job Overview: The Interpreter role is crucial for facilitating communication within various United Nations meetings, ensuring that speeches and statements are accurately interpreted into English from French, Spanish, and/or Russian. The incumbent will typically service up to seven meetings per week, with each meeting lasting no more than three hours. This position requires not only linguistic proficiency but also the ability to handle sensitive discussions and lead teams of interpreters. The Interpreter may also be involved in training new interpreters and performing data analysis to support decision-making processes. This role demands a high level of professionalism, concentration, and the ability to work under pressure while maintaining clarity and accuracy in interpretation.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Interpreter will be responsible for providing interpretation services during meetings of various UN bodies, ensuring that all communications are conveyed accurately and effectively. Duties include interpreting speeches from French, Spanish, and/or Russian into English, leading teams of interpreters, instructing and advising interpreter trainees, and potentially taking on the role of Programming Officer. The Interpreter will also collect and analyze data to identify trends and provide insights through various data visualization methods, contributing to data-driven planning and reporting. Additional responsibilities may include performing related duties as required by the Chief of the English Interpretation Section.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must have a first-level university degree or equivalent qualification. Additionally, passing the United Nations Competitive Examination for English Interpreters is a prerequisite for this position. The role requires a perfect command of English, which is expected to be the incumbent's main language, along with an excellent command of French and proficiency in Spanish and/or Russian. Candidates should demonstrate a high level of professionalism, communication skills, teamwork, and a commitment to continuous learning.
Educational Background: A first-level degree from a recognized university or an institution of equivalent status is required for this position. This educational background is essential to ensure that candidates possess the necessary knowledge and skills to perform effectively in the role of Interpreter.
Experience: Candidates must have at least five years of professional interpreting experience, particularly within international organizations. Out of these five years, two years of experience within the United Nations Common System or similar organizations is desirable. Experience in data analytics or related fields is also considered an asset, as it enhances the candidate's ability to contribute to data-driven decision-making processes.
Languages: The mandatory languages for this position are English and French, with a perfect command of English being essential. Candidates should also possess an excellent command of French and have proficiency in either Spanish or Russian. This multilingual capability is crucial for effective interpretation during meetings involving diverse linguistic backgrounds.
