Established to promote the value of volunteerism, UNV collaborates with various partners to integrate qualified and motivated volunteers into development programming. The organization operates five Regional Offices located in Amman, Bangkok, Dakar, Nairobi, and Panama City, which serve as the primary entry points for partners wishing to engage with UNV. These offices provide essential services and solutions to government partners, UN entities, civil society, and the private sector, while also leading the delivery of advisory services on volunteer infrastructure. UNV's mission is to enhance the global recognition of volunteerism and its impact on development.
Job Overview: The UNV programme is currently seeking three online volunteers from Algeria to participate in the #54FacesofAfrica campaign, which aims to empower African youth by providing them with a platform to share their personal stories and insights regarding what it means to be African. Volunteers will be tasked with writing personal narratives that reflect the challenges and opportunities faced by youth in Africa, specifically targeting individuals aged 18-3
The campaign has already gathered over 1,000 stories from various African countries, but there is a need for more representation from Algeria and other selected countries. Volunteers will engage with their communities to encourage participation and ensure that the stories submitted are authentic and of high quality. This initiative not only aims to amplify youth voices but also to foster a broader dialogue about Africa's development.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Write personal stories from young Africans (ages 18-35) that respond to the question: 'What does it mean to be African?' highlighting both challenges and opportunities for youth in Africa.
Submit these stories through a provided Google Form or via audio/video submissions, ensuring they are personal narratives that reflect the unique perspectives of African youth.
Engage with the local community to encourage participation in the campaign, which may include sharing the campaign on social media, organizing local storytelling events, or collaborating with youth organizations.
Review and edit submitted stories to ensure they meet the campaign's standards for quality, authenticity, and relevance, ensuring that the narratives are compelling and resonate with the audience.
Required Qualifications: Volunteers should possess strong writing skills, particularly in storytelling, and have a passion for youth empowerment and community engagement. They should be able to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with others. Familiarity with social media platforms and community outreach strategies is also beneficial. A commitment to the values of the UNV programme and an understanding of the challenges faced by youth in Africa are essential.
Educational Background: While there are no specific educational requirements listed, a background in communications, social sciences, or related fields may be advantageous. Volunteers should have a strong command of the language in which they will be writing their stories, as well as an understanding of cultural contexts relevant to their narratives.
Experience: Previous experience in writing, community engagement, or volunteer work is preferred but not mandatory. The ideal candidates will have a demonstrated interest in youth issues and a commitment to promoting the voices of young people in Africa. Experience in organizing events or campaigns would also be beneficial.
Languages: Fluency in the language of the stories being written is mandatory. Proficiency in English or French may be advantageous, as these languages are commonly used in international communications and may help in reaching a broader audience.
Additional Notes: This is a volunteer position with no specified contract duration. The role is part-time and can be conducted remotely, allowing for flexibility in participation. Volunteers will have the opportunity to network with UNV, UNDP, and other partners involved in the campaign, enhancing their professional connections and visibility within the international community.
