Job Overview:
The Migration Health Physician will play a crucial role in the operations of the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Bujumbura, Burundi. This position involves overseeing the daily operations of the MHAC, ensuring that all health assessments meet the technical requirements set by resettlement countries. The physician will conduct medical examinations, manage TB treatment, and oversee immunization programs, ensuring compliance with international health standards. The role requires a strong focus on data management, quality improvement, and collaboration with various stakeholders to enhance the health services provided to migrants and refugees. The successful candidate will also be responsible for maintaining accurate health records and ensuring the effective management of health-related incidents.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the efficient daily operations of the Migration Health Assessment Center (MHAC) in coordination with the Chief Migration Health Officer (CMHO).
  • Conduct migration health assessments, including medical examinations, imaging, laboratory testing, vaccinations, TB management, treatment and referrals, and documentation.
  • Identify refugees and migrants accurately during health assessments and maintain comprehensive health records.
  • Provide treatment for TB and sexually transmitted infections, and support HIV counseling activities.
  • Oversee immunization and presumptive treatment programs, ensuring adherence to technical guidelines.
  • Implement quality improvement systems within the MHAC, conducting regular quality control activities.
  • Organize the collection and analysis of migration health data, ensuring data quality and timely reporting.
  • Ensure accurate data entry into the Migrant Management Operational System Application (MiMOSA).
  • Manage financial aspects of the MHAC, including budget preparation and financial reporting. 1
  • Coordinate procurement of medical supplies and equipment. 1
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate must possess a university degree in Medicine from an accredited institution, along with a valid license to practice in the country. A minimum of four years of professional work experience in a clinical setting is required. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of clinical medicine, patient safety, and infection control. Additional qualifications in pediatrics, pulmonology, emergency medicine, internal medicine, public health, or healthcare management are advantageous. Proven experience as a master trainer is also a plus.

Educational Background:
Candidates must hold a university degree in Medicine from an accredited academic institution. Accreditation is verified through the UNESCO World Higher Education Database. A valid medical license to practice in Burundi is mandatory for this position.

Experience:
Candidates should have continuous clinical experience, preferably in a multidisciplinary hospital setting, with the last clinical posting occurring within the last three years. A solid understanding of clinical medicine, excellent bedside manner, and knowledge of patient safety protocols are essential. Experience in public health or healthcare administration is also beneficial, as is a background in training or mentoring healthcare staff.

Languages:
Fluency in both written and spoken English and French is required for this position. Additionally, proficiency in Kirundi and Swahili is desirable, as these languages may enhance communication with local populations. Language proficiency will be assessed during the selection process, which may include written and oral evaluations.

Additional Notes:
This position is a Special Short Term Graded contract with an initial duration of 6 months, extendable up to 9 months based on funding and performance. The recruitment process is open to both internal and external candidates, with a preference for qualified first-tier candidates.
