Job Overview: The position of Interpreter/Translator for Unaccompanied Minors involves providing essential support to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Thessaloniki, Greece. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in facilitating communication between unaccompanied migrant children (UMC) and IOM staff, ensuring that the UMC can access necessary services and support. This role requires a deep understanding of the cultural and emotional challenges faced by UMC, as well as the ability to convey information accurately and sensitively. The interpreter/translator will assist in various capacities, including providing interpretation during health consultations, translating informational materials, and acting as a cultural mediator to help UMC adjust to their new environment. The position is integral to the successful implementation of IOM's project aimed at supporting UMC in Greece, and the candidate will work under the supervision of the Project Coordinator and Shelter Coordinator.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide interpretation and translation services for unaccompanied migrant children (UMC) in accommodation facilities.
Facilitate effective communication between IOM staff and UMC, ensuring that language barriers do not hinder access to services.
Assist in translating informational materials to be disseminated to UMC, ensuring clarity and cultural relevance.
Act as a cultural mediator, helping UMC navigate their new environment and understand local customs and practices.
Support UMC in communicating with health providers and public authorities, ensuring their needs are met.
Gather and relay information to IOM staff to enhance understanding of UMC's perceptions and experiences.
Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors, contributing to the overall success of the project.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a high school degree or certificate, with a bachelor's degree in Interpretation/Translation, Social Science, Humanities, or a related field considered an advantage. Previous experience in a similar role is preferred, particularly in providing direct assistance to migrants and/or refugees. Familiarity with working in a multicultural environment is also advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate strong computer literacy in standard software applications, such as MS Office, and possess a valid driver's license with at least five years of driving experience, which is an added advantage.
Educational Background: The minimum educational requirement for this position is a high school degree or certificate. A bachelor's degree in Interpretation/Translation, Social Science, Humanities, or a relevant discipline is preferred and will be viewed favorably during the selection process. Candidates must have graduated from accredited universities recognized in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
Experience: Candidates should have previous experience in a similar role, ideally involving direct assistance to migrants and/or refugees. Experience working in a multicultural environment is highly valued, as it demonstrates the ability to navigate diverse cultural contexts and communicate effectively with individuals from various backgrounds. Certification or training in interpretation or translation is preferred, as it indicates a professional level of competency in the required skills.
Languages: A working knowledge of English or Greek is required for this position. Fluency in Farsi/Dari, both written and oral, is also mandatory, as it is essential for effective communication with the UMC. Proficiency in additional languages, particularly those relevant to the migrant population, may be considered an asset. Language proficiency will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments to ensure candidates meet the necessary communication standards.
Additional Notes: This position is subject to local recruitment, meaning only candidates holding a valid residence and work permit for Greece will be eligible for consideration. The appointment will be contingent upon certification of medical fitness for the role, as well as verification of residency, visa, and any necessary authorizations by the relevant government authorities.
