Job Overview: The Nursing Officer position at the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Harare, Zimbabwe, involves a range of responsibilities aimed at ensuring the health and well-being of migrants and refugees undergoing health assessments. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Chief of Mission and the Chief Migration Health Officer, coordinating daily nursing activities to meet the technical requirements of resettlement countries. This includes conducting medical examinations, laboratory testing, vaccinations, and managing tuberculosis treatment and referrals. The role also encompasses providing health education and counseling to migrants, assisting in the development of health education materials, and ensuring proper identification procedures are followed. The Nursing Officer will play a crucial role in maintaining quality assurance in nursing activities and will be involved in administrative reporting and program updates. The position requires a proactive approach to facilitate mobile missions and ensure that migrants receive continuous care throughout their migration journey.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Coordinate daily nursing activities in the Migration Health Assessment Clinic to fulfill technical requirements for resettlement countries, including medical examinations, imaging, laboratory testing, vaccinations, TB management, treatment and referrals, and documentation.
Provide health education and counseling to migrants regarding the health assessment process and treatments.
Assist in developing health education materials.
Implement identification procedures for all migrants in relation to health assessments.
Ensure adherence to Health Assessment Programme checklists and SOPs, monitoring standard universal precautions.
Participate in quality improvement and assurance procedures for nursing activities.
Verify pharmacy stock, analyze data, and prepare medical kits as needed.
Create schedules and assign tasks to nursing staff, maintaining workflow and providing feedback for improvement.
Prepare administrative reports and program updates. 1
Contribute to planning and executing mobile missions. 1
Verify pre-departure documents and assist in preparations. 1
Perform medical escort duties as required. 1
Maintain collaborative relationships with partners for information sharing. 1
Collect and share statistical information with the CMHO. 1
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited institution, with a minimum of four years of professional work experience. A Master’s degree or higher is advantageous. A valid nursing license to practice in Zimbabwe is required. Candidates should demonstrate excellent technical skills, particularly in phlebotomy, and have training or experience in tuberculosis management, mass immunizations, communicable diseases, and public health. Knowledge of clinical nursing principles, patient safety, and infection control is essential. Proficiency in MS Office is required, and clinical expertise or a post-graduate diploma in emergency care is a plus.
Educational Background: The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited academic institution. Candidates with a Master’s degree or higher from an accredited institution will be given preference. Accreditation must be from universities listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database. A valid nursing license to practice in Zimbabwe is mandatory.
Experience: A minimum of four years of relevant clinical experience is required, with at least two years in a supervisory role. Candidates should have excellent technical skills, particularly in phlebotomy, and experience in tuberculosis management, mass immunizations, communicable diseases, and public health is advantageous. Managerial experience is desirable, along with knowledge of preventive care and disease control principles.
Languages: Fluency in English and local languages is required, both oral and written. IOM’s official languages include English, French, and Spanish, and proficiency in these languages will be evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
Additional Notes: The position is subject to local recruitment, and only candidates holding a valid residence and work permit for Zimbabwe will be considered.
