Job Overview:
The Controller position at Ashoka is a unique leadership opportunity that involves overseeing all finance, accounting, and reporting activities within the organization. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller will play a crucial role in ensuring that the organization maintains effective financial systems and procedures to support its mission. This position requires a collaborative approach, working closely with senior leadership and various departments to enhance the integration of finance with program operations. The Controller will also be responsible for educating program leaders about finance and accounting procedures, thereby fostering a culture of financial awareness and accountability throughout the organization.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Controller will have a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to: overseeing all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems to ensure compliance with GAAP standards; implementing internal controls for revenue receipt and expenditure management; coordinating audit activities; analyzing financial data and presenting reports to senior leadership; reviewing and approving payroll; managing relationships with external stakeholders; establishing finance policies and procedures; and leading the finance team to improve the application of the accounting ERP system, NetSuite. Additionally, the Controller will provide leadership and support to the finance team, ensuring clear communication and a positive work environment.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Controller position must possess a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation and have 2 to 5 years of experience in a Controller or equivalent role. Experience in a not-for-profit organization, particularly in grant accounting, is essential. Public accounting experience is considered a plus. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in managing and directing finance and accounting teams, as well as a solid understanding of ERP platforms, preferably NetSuite. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to research and implement GAAP rules are also required.

Educational Background:
A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is required for this position. A master's degree or additional certifications in finance or accounting would be advantageous. Candidates must have a strong foundation in financial principles and practices, particularly as they relate to non-profit organizations.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have a minimum of 2 to 5 years of relevant experience in finance and accounting, specifically in a leadership role such as a Controller. Experience in the non-profit sector is highly desirable, as is experience with grant accounting and financial statement audits. Candidates should also have a proven track record of managing teams and collaborating with various departments to achieve organizational goals.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages would be considered a plus, as it may facilitate communication with international stakeholders and partners.
