Job Overview:
The Vehicle Technician will play a crucial role in maintaining the operational readiness of the UNMISS vehicle fleet. This position involves performing both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on standard civilian pattern vehicles (SCPV) to ensure they meet safety and operational standards. The technician will be responsible for diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and electronic faults in various vehicle systems, including ignition, fuel injection, braking systems, and more. The role requires adherence to safety procedures during repairs and maintenance, as well as the ability to produce detailed reports documenting all servicing and repairs conducted. The technician will also be expected to operate recovery trucks and material handling equipment, contributing to the overall efficiency of the transport section.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct scheduled and unscheduled services and repairs on the mission fleet of vehicles, equipment, and trailers according to manufacturer standards.
  • Diagnose and rectify mechanical, electrical, and electronic faults on light and heavy vehicles, including battery systems, ignition systems, electronic fuel injection, anti-lock braking systems, and more.
  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures during repairs and the fitting of replacement parts.
  • Perform vehicle inspections on UN-owned vehicles assigned to various units.
  • Document all servicing and repairs through detailed reporting.
  • Operate recovery trucks to recover breakdown vehicles and material handling equipment such as forklifts.
  • Test and check wiring and parts of older vehicles using portable instruments and diagnostic tools.
  • Assist in identifying required parts using electronic parts catalogs (EPCs).
  • Service, reset, and maintain the electronic vehicle monitoring system (EVMS Carlog). 1
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment and perform any other tasks as required.

Required Qualifications:
  • A valid national driving license is required.
  • A technical or vocational certificate in automotive or mechanical engineering is required.
  • Relevant training in heavy-duty vehicles or equipment is desirable.
  • Knowledge of guidelines and procedures for the safe operation of workshop equipment is essential.

Educational Background:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required for this position. Additionally, a technical or vocational certificate in automotive or mechanical engineering is necessary to ensure the technician has the foundational knowledge required for the role.

Experience:
Candidates must have at least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in motor vehicle fault diagnosis, service, maintenance, and repairs, or a related field. However, this requirement is reduced to one (1) year for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher. Experience working in an international organization or non-governmental organization is desirable, as it indicates familiarity with diverse working environments and protocols.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is required for this position, as English is one of the working languages of the United Nations. Knowledge of French is also beneficial. Additionally, familiarity with national languages spoken in South Sudan is desirable, as it may enhance communication with local stakeholders and colleagues.

This position is subject to local recruitment, meaning that candidates must be residents of South Sudan or within commuting distance of the duty station.
