Job Overview: The Consultant/Environmental Sustainability Specialist will play a crucial role in monitoring and analyzing data related to water and energy consumption, as well as waste production, in alignment with established targets. This position involves collaboration with the Water and Sanitation and Facilities Management team to ensure effective environmental management practices are implemented. The specialist will also be responsible for advising on best practices in environmental management, ensuring compliance with UN legislation and policies. The role includes preparing and supporting the implementation of the mission's Environmental Management System and Environmental Strategy, contributing to the overall sustainability goals of the UN mission in Abyei.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Consultant/Environmental Sustainability Specialist will be tasked with several key responsibilities, including:
Developing and coordinating cross-mission Environmental Sustainability Awareness Campaigns focused on reducing water and energy consumption, as well as solid and liquid waste reduction and recycling initiatives.
Assisting in the monitoring and analysis of data related to water and energy consumption and waste production, ensuring alignment with set targets.
Taking into account environmental audit reports during the execution of tasks.
Advising on best practices for environmental management and sustainability, ensuring adherence to UN legislation and policies.
Preparing and supporting the implementation of the mission's Environmental Management System, Environmental Preparedness and Response Plan, and Environmental Strategy.
Analyzing data from the Field Remote Infrastructure Management portal and integrating this information into the management of SMART camps.
Producing detailed reports on contaminated land and providing guidance on land contamination risks and water pollution issues.
Offering a comprehensive set of recommendations for soil remediation projects and overseeing their implementation.
Conducting environmental assessments and surveys, including Environmental Impact Assessments. 1
Maintaining records of environmental issues and actions taken, including hazardous installations within the mission. 1
Providing environmental briefings to mission personnel to enhance overall environmental awareness. 1
Liaising with local authorities and UN bodies on environmental issues. 1
Coordinating stakeholders to deliver environmental and sustainability initiatives and monitoring the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 1
Carrying out additional tasks as required to support the DPO/DOS Environmental Policy and mission objectives.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a first-level university degree in environmental engineering or a related field. Additionally, a minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in environmental management or engineering is required. Experience with project planning, execution, and evaluation of environmental compliance standards is essential, along with proven analytical skills. Familiarity with the DOS positive legacy concept and monitoring of SDG goals is advantageous. Candidates should also have experience in writing complex environmental reports, including waste management and remediation approaches, and knowledge of UN rules and regulations related to field missions is a plus.
Educational Background: The position requires a first-level university degree in environmental engineering or a related field. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of environmental management and sustainability practices within the context of UN operations.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have at least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in environmental management or engineering. This experience should include methodologies for project planning, execution, and evaluation of environmental compliance standards. Proven analytical skills and experience in writing detailed environmental reports are also necessary. Experience working in UN field missions is considered an advantage, as it provides insight into the unique challenges and requirements of such environments.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory for this position, as English is one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat. Knowledge of French is also beneficial, as it is another working language of the UN, and may enhance communication within the organization.
