Job Overview:
The National Irrigation and Water Infrastructure Engineer will play a crucial role in supporting irrigation and rural infrastructure activities in Iraq. This position involves a variety of tasks including market assessment, design, implementation, and capacity building related to irrigation systems. The engineer will work closely with the FAO Representative and the Water & Agriculture Technical Advisor to ensure that irrigation projects meet the specific needs of local cropping patterns and comply with FAO standards. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of water use in agriculture.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Draft technical specifications and layouts for irrigation systems tailored to the cropping patterns supported by FAO Iraq projects, considering factors such as crop water requirements and optimal spacing.
- Oversee the installation and commissioning of irrigation systems and other rural infrastructure at project sites.
- Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with technical specifications, FAO standards, and donor requirements.
- Organize training sessions for farmers and stakeholders on best practices for the operation and maintenance of irrigation systems to promote water efficiency.
- Develop training materials and technical manuals to facilitate knowledge sharing.
- Act as a liaison with government entities, local authorities, and project stakeholders to ensure effective coordination.
- Participate in technical meetings and field assessments to provide insights and recommendations.
- Monitor project progress and prepare regular reports on irrigation activities, documenting lessons learned and suggesting improvements for future projects.
Required Qualifications:
- A university degree in Irrigation, Water Resources, Agriculture, or a related field.
- A minimum of two years of relevant experience in irrigation and rural infrastructure implementation.
- Proficiency in both English and Arabic is essential.
- Iraqi Nationality is required.
- Familiarity with UN operations is considered an asset.
Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a university degree in a relevant field such as Irrigation, Water Resources, or Agriculture. It is important that the degree is obtained from an institution that is accredited and recognized in the World Higher Education Database (WHED).
Experience:
The position requires at least two years of relevant experience in the field of irrigation and rural infrastructure implementation. This experience should include practical knowledge of irrigation systems and the ability to manage projects effectively.
Languages:
Proficiency in English and Arabic is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an advantage but is not required.
